PostPosted: 01:20 - 19 Dec 2007    Post subject: Heated Grips - Are they worth it? (Help me) Reply with quote

Yes, so its pretty damn cold now being december and all that. Its not my first winter, but im starting to get annoyed with cold hands. With all my 'winter' gear on im perfectly warm, but after around 30 mins my hands start to go numb and very cold. This occurs even with inner gloves on.

So, if I had heated grips I would be all set for hours of slidey winter fun. However, I have no experience of them at all so are they actually any good? And could anyone possibly recommend a set that would do the job without being too expensive?

Oh, one more thing If I may. Are they particularly hard to fit? Im not scared of taking my bike apart, but generally I dont know what im doing as I have little mechanical knowledge.

Any help would be cool (karma given Mr. Green)

Cheers.

Rubish as they look muffs are worth fitting first, trouble with grips is you can turn them right up but you'll still have cold knuckles and burning hot palms.

Muffs block out the wind and extend the cold free period considerably.

At the moment i have both and its sorted it, i've had either or and alone they dont fix it, as it is i'd be set to go to siberia.. which is good cause it seems to be comeing to us.

Oxford do some grips that velcro over the top, these are what i'm useing now, if anything there too bloody hot, they can be fitted in 5minutes, just scotchlock them into your pilot light wires, lights off = no grip power.

Oh yeh, i'm still wearing my summer gloves in this lot.

Agreed,

I have the Hot hands (velco grips) and I prefer them to actual grips as they can easily be remove for when you do not want the extra thickness. I also have the oxford muffs.

Muffs FTW.

I have oxford grips and i think they are spot on, i use mine all winter then in the summer when it tips it down with rain as it seemed to all year this year i flick them on with my summer gloves, when i get off the bike my hands are steaming, and everyone else is whinging !!!!! i do understand why muffs would improve the situation as my fingers do still feel the cold, but as my palms are red hot i can usually warm my finger up pretty quickly after a 30 min ride. they are really easy to fit.

Only thing with oxford grips to be aware of is get the led controller, the ones with the controller which spins have an issue the controller catches on fire, i guess thats one way to get hot hands !!!!

I have the Oxford Hot Grips, wouldn't be without them now, saved me suffering numb fingers last year. Easy to wire in and pretty clear instructions on fitting them.

when got my VFR threw money at the problem and got the OE heated grips; fantastic and controllable warmth. not cheap i recall (£70ish?) but with warm-ish gloves = all year round hot hands. Looking into getting muffs too.

Okay guys, thanks for the help.

I'll look into getting both me thinks. I have always thought the muffs look a little silly though Confused. I suppose its worth it for warm hands Wink. The Oxford Hot Hands seem like the best deal. Can just be ripped off for the summer.

i have the normal oxford heated grips. They are great. As long as you got decent winter gloves you wont have cold knuckles n stuff. I have the alpinestars drystar ones and i never have cold hands.
I have just had to replace the controller as some pikie bastard decided to steal the nob off it.

I've just fitted the oxford grips to mine and they do seem pretty good - will have no need to take them off as the grips seem nicer than the OEM ones.

If you don't like muffs you could also look at handguards that would reduce the windblast quite a bit (just to fit for the winter then take them off).

I have heated grips on my poorly ER5.

They work like a charm round town speeds but over 50mph the cold does get to your fingers.

I'm considering some muffs.

I'll get the grips first and see how it goes. It has to be better than nothing. Like I said, its annoying having only cold hands.

Oh, the karma ends here. I cannot rate anymore posts today Crying or Very sad.

Maybe some heated gloves maybe an option.

A friend of mine has the oxford heated grips, but he cannot feel the heat coming through his winter gloves. wearing thinner gloves only heats his palms. He bought some heated gloves which he claims are fantastic.

Not sure which ones he bought, but think they run from the motorcycle battery.

Some links for some heated gloves, and glove liners.

BTW.. I have the factory bmw heated grips on my bike..and think they are brill...even with summer gloves in. Thumbs Up

I have Oxford Grips, and I am not quite sure how I managed without them (only on a 125 mind you, but it still gets cold).

They would probably be far more efficient with muffs as well as the heat would stay enclosed and you wouldn't have the wind chill.

If it's a cold day, I can't consciously notice the effect of my heated grips (Oxford ones), but I sure as hell know when they turn off.

Unfortunately, my alternator has a hard time powering them at idle/low revs. They turn themselves off pretty quickly if I'm stopped with my break light, headlight and indicator on.

I may get some muffs if it gets much colder.

Heated grips are great - definately worth it. If you ride in heavy traffic your clutch-hand fingers will still get cold though. Muffs are also reat, and both together fantastic.

One of the reasons why i bought my ZX6R was that one of the added extras AS WELL as the can, panniers and new tyres WAS heated grips. Knowing that i'll be caught off guard whilst riding through summer and spring nights with summer gloves, it was a handy inclusion. But be sure to turn them off. I've been left with a dead battery on many a morning due to forgetting to turn the grips off!

They're also very easy to remove because it'sa plastic tube that slides over your clip-ons, so no need for grip glue etc.

It's good stuff and definately worth it in winter when combined with gloves. Means that you can still ride with your summer gloves if you want to!

Handguards also make quite a difference if you don't want to use muffs. Look a bit funny on a sports bike, though.

Interestingly I just read in the Heine Gericke catalogue that it says if you have the heated grips to high this can reverse the polarity of the waterproof liners such as Gortex and allow the water in to the glove.

I think that is only if you have them really hot though!

Cheers

does nobody wear 2 pairs of gloves? I wear my leather gloves with a thin cotton pair inside and i never have trouble with cold hands any more.

If you’re gonna bring back threads from the grave, at least post correct info. Grips SHOULD be wired directly to the battery, via an ignition switched relay.
