 |
|
Getting a loan, want a bike to love and polish, not hate to ride. So getting something nice, thing is...i dont know what!
Was thinking along the usual lines of the bikes below, but i have reasons not to by any of them lol.
CBR 600RR - Boring colours, lack of USD forks on the older ones
B1h 636 - Race rep only, and not overly keen on front
GSXR k4 600 - Would regret not spending an extra grand to ge the 750 and resenting it lol
Then i started to think away from the box a little bit:
Ducati 748 - Getting on a bit now and wouldnt keep up in a straight line with my mates.
and lastly the Honda VTR SP1, seen advertised under budget but only the red colour which im not overly keen on. Though for £3-400 on ebay i can get replacement repsol fairings which would be quite nice Thing is, ive never ridden a twin? But this is my favourite choice...at the moment anyway lol
So my question is, what else is there that i should consider? Anyone got any views on any of the above bikes?

Well you know I bum the GSXR so I don't have to say anything about it.
I like the idea of the sp1 dude.
Nice sound, good handling bike even if a bit slow its still a laugh to ride.
The one I have ridden with/ridden had twin arrows and the noise was unbelievable. Also has tarty clocks ____________________ ◙◙► K6 GSXR 600 ◄◙◙◙◙► K5 GSXR 1000 ◄◙◙◙◙► K5 GSXR 600 ◄◙◙◙◙► 96 RF600r ◄◙◙

I have an SP1 and the wife has a 636 B1H, so I feel like I can comment on the both of those
£3500 will get you a very tidy bike, wife paid £3700 Aug 06 for her 636 with 2700 miles and loads of extras, I would expect the price to have dropped more now. I paid £3900 for my SP1 with ALL the extras in July 06.
As for the bikes, they're completely different but great in their own ways, if you want a fast track bike then get the 636, it is alot faster around the track, doesnt mean the SP1 is crap but the 636 is lighter, almost as powerful and has better brakes. Speed/acceleration etc I dont think there's much in it.
A healthy SP1 will make between 115-125BHP (Stock SP1 system is extremely good and light so you only need a half system for great power increases) depending on fueling and pipes, a healthy 636 will be 110-115BHP.
On the road the 636 is quite uncomfortable, rear shock is very hard but works... does everything fine on the road and has good midrange for a 600. We use our bikes all year around and build quality is great on both bikes, the 636 has more electrical goodies like rev light, lap timer, clock etc etc oh yeah, the 636 has stunning brakes.
I haven't ridden the SP1 on the track but I'd imagine it would be awesome at long flowing corners but not as easy to flick about tight quick corners. On the road it's very nice to ride once you sort the fuelling out, without a PCIII it jerks like crazy below 4k rpm even in 6th gear. It handles very well, doesnt feel heavy once you're on the bike. Sounds great and Honda majorly over engineered everything about this bike, reason you don't see many spares? they don't go wrong. It comes over geared as standard but if you reduce a tooth on the front its much better.
I like riding both bikes, I like the torque of the 1000 and the 2t reving nature of the 600. They're both great to ride but completely different styles. If theres one thing I can say about the SP1: It grows on you every time you ride it, it has alot of character.
Test ride both. ____________________ My bikes are at https://www.bikepics.com/members/dynamight/ |

I dont want any other model GSXR other than the k4/5/6, so no to them.
Only like the 06 R6, so out of budget.
Dont need multiple bikes, my new workplace is 4 miles away.
ZX9R is one ive not really thought about...
Luke, thats the only reason i wanted a Ducati
Gaz, shup fool.
Cheers Dynamight, some good info there! How much more is it for insurance on the SP1? Somthing ive got to look at aswell
As for the Mille - Only like the newer shape ones, and i dont think ill get one in my budget!

This year I'm paying £258 TPFT on the SP1, thats me being 24, 3yrs NCB, fault accident claim, in a locked shed. Paid £575 last year but naturally with one less NCB and a year younger The accident claim certainly doesnt help.
Bloody wife pays around £220 TPFT for her 636 with 3yrs NCB and shes 23.
I generally do a few full online quotes to get a rough idea, hence this year the best I got online was about £350 TPFT but managed to haggle my way down to £258 by playing Carol Nash and Express Insurance against each other
I would get a quote on all possible bikes, sometimes you find a certain bike is really cheap for you to insure without any real reason. When I was selling my old 1999 ZX6R, a 17yr old lad was all lined up to buy it but the insurance quotes were over £1000 (as expected!) but for some reason he could insure a 1999 R6 for just over £500.... as far as sports bikes go, the 1999 R6 is more sporty so should be more expensive?? Theres just no logic. Naturally he got a R6 instead ____________________ My bikes are at https://www.bikepics.com/members/dynamight/ |
