Me and a mate want to goto a GP abroad next year, we are thinking about going to the Brno GP. Getting the boat from Newcastle to Amsterdam > Belgium > Germany > The Ring > Brno which is about 1300miles. Then the most direct route home or through a bit of france if we have time.

I've only been going over it in my head and its at the very early planning stages so dont laugh too hard if i'm way out but i reckon time wise we could do it in 5-6days (comfortably that is) and we'd need about £500 to spend on Fuel and other such things as food
Have i forgotten anything?

I can't remember what the Brno GP was like last year so can someone tell me is it a track known for good racing? or is it boring as sh*t? Has anyone been to the Brno GP or even just the Czech Republic? nice place or a sh*thole?

Your input would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Czech Republic is pretty cool.

I've only ever been to the north, near the Polish border and the scenery was amazing! Its called the 'Bohemian Paradise' - with good reason too! (google maps for Turnov - We stayed in a house on the hills over a town called Semily near there)

I've been on the train through Brno and from what I remember, the landscape around there was low hills with nice rivers and small villages with old fashioned houses. However - don't quote me on that. That could well have been Hungary Confused

I would say that unless you plan on visiting Prague, then don't drive into it or even near it. When we visited it, if you went at the wrong times then the roads were gridlocked, especially at the main transport interchanges at the end of the metro lines etc.

Also, another thing I remember now is that when we got the train from Prague to Dresden, there was a beautiful valley with a river through the bottom. The train hugged the rivers edge and I'm sure there was a road that followed it too.
Look at the river that road 261 pretty much follows
If you can find that at all, then its lovely, as is riding down the Mosel / Rhine valleys in Germany.

Oh man, I've just let myself go again lol with touring ideas. Try and ride a bit of the Rhine valley if you can - Its so nice with great roads right by the river, with big goods trains thundering past on the side!

So in conclusion - DO IT! You'll kick yourself if you sit at home and spend the money on some crappy nights out instead that you'll forget about after 1 week. These trips stay with you forever! Thumbs Up

I think that on the face of it you are taking on too much, especially if you are planning to use you GSXR1000 for the trip. In short I think the distance you want to cover will cripple you. I'm not saying don't do it but if you have never been to a foreign GP before, why not try one that is a little closer to home instead?

5-6 days on a super sports bike there and then another 5-6 days to ride back will not only be boring but it'll hurt like hell. Most people only attempt to do any of these things that you are planning one at a time. Such as a trip to the GP or a trip to the Nurburgring, not everything all at the same time.

Like I said, I'm not trying to put you off, that you just need to understand how not to take too much on at once unless you are a seasoned european traveller.

!!!
I'm not sure that'll work. Thats 500 miles a day as it stands and that doesn't include riding around finding campsites / hotels, getting lost, actually enjoying the ride!

Would expect to do such a distance over at least twice the time or else you're going to be setting off at dawn and arriving places in the middle of the night. You'll get knackered and it just won't work out.

You will not manage it full stop in that time scale. That is at least 500 miles per day and working on an average constant speed of 50mph (without stopping), it would take you 10 hours.

I haven't tried that kind of distance/time myself but a mate of mine has to get to spain and it about killed him. One day they spent somewhere around 14 hours on the road and they didn't even make 500 miles that day.

Seriously, thats like Glasgow to Dover EVERY SINGLE DAY!
Imagine for 5 days in a row, waking up, getting ready before riding that far, before having to find a place to sleep for the night. Its manic and seriously, not worth doing!!

If its any help now (I know old thread and all) I travelled via Dover-Calais to Brno. I left on the Saturday (early 6am ferry). I had intended on going to the ring, but some how got confused and ended up in Nuremberg (which has a ring...road).

I stayed there the night and then ventured onto Brno. It was 2 days of hard slog riding (inc. getting a little lost). I arrived in Brno to hear the bikes going round for what was apparently the last laps of the race. I never made it inside the circuit. So I would recommend 2 days to get there instead of 1.

Camping is easy whilst the GP is on. There are plenty of temporary campsites around, just ride the area surrounding the circuit. I should warn you that you really want to find a nice gated campsite with security. I was in an overflow campsite (temporary) which had no security and was open to the road. I was robbed whilst I slept (along with pretty much everyone else in the field.

Keep your wits about you, when you enter Brno you will see the huge tower blocks shadowing the city. Life is tough there and tourists are easy targets. There was at no point any physical threat though.

I personally would head back through the Czech Republic. Cesky Krumlov is well worth a visit (where they have filmed a lot of movies inc. Hostel). It a very beautiful place. Prague is also well worth visiting if you have never been. I liked the north eastern part (bodering Poland) as the terrain is stunning and the villages quaint.

I managed to travel Prague to Calais in around 12 hours overnight, so Amsterdam should be fairly easy. Czech roads are not always that good, their motorways are barely A road level.

Good luck.

I am going to czech republic in september.
My plan is to get the tunnel, travel to Aachen for the first night then through Germany to the Czeh republic, 2 days.
I am travelling round the Czeck republic, 3 days till I get to Cesky Krumolov for 3 nights, then a run of 3 days to get home.
Any tips and hints, places to see in the czech repubic that I should know, I aim to stop at a few places on the way, a couple of motorcycle museums and a few castles.
