And i want to give my bike an oil change.

I have a very BASIC idea of how to do it, i just need some tips on what not to do, so i make as little mistakes as possible.

Im also aware i dont have a torque wrench.. is it really needed when doing the sump bolt back up?

Also my tool range is lacking alot, im off to Norwich in an hour so basic tools i need to buy can be done then.

Thankyou!

An oil change is pretty straight forward as you can imagine. The main "No No" is the sump bolt. As you said you dont have a torque wrench, so dont overtighten it. Are you changing the oil filter too? It is advisable and ideal opportunity to do it.

Well i was thinking that too, if its ideal to buy a torque wrench and it makes my life a bit easier then im all up for purchasing one, ideal investment anyway.

You don't need a torque wrench but it is advisable. As long as you just pinch the bolt up and then a 1/4 more at most and not give it all you have got. Keep an eye on it just in case it starts leaking.

As above if the bike has a filter change that also otherwise your only doing half a job.

Its the old Domi engine if that helps.

as above really.
i have never used a torque wrench in my life,
just dont be over zealous, its better to have it a bit too loose and get a wee leak that you can just give it a little tighten up later on,
than over tighten, and get a leak any way because you have fuct the thread,
also only hand tighten the oil filter and rub a little oil on the rubber gasket,
or you'll end up with this the next time you have to do a filter change

Run the engine briefly to warm the oil up - this will help with draining. Remove the sump bolt, drain the oil out, fit a new sump-bolt washer, re-fit bolt taking cae not to over-tighten it. This is just plugging a hole not supporting it's own weight. As a guide, if you have quite strong hands it needs to be no more than you can tighten it by holding a ratchet near the head and turning your wrist, then a small tug on the handle to nip it up. The new washer will deform to provide an oil-tight seal and stop the bolt coming undone. Check it after you've ridden the bike the 1st time.

well i couldn't undo it with either my hand or my oil filter tool, so i resorted to the screwdriver through the filter trick, which still didn't work, so i then preceded to tear the filter to pieces so i could get to the little holes and use a screw driver and hammer to turn the filter,
i had to remove the exhaust system to do it, what should have been a 10min oil change turned into a 3 hour mission, just because the last person to do an oil change didn't oil the filters rubber seal, and over tightened it.

fun times Very Happy

One other handy tip is to fill the filter with fresh oil. The oil pump tends to draw oil through the filter, if the filter is empty then the oil pump will be sucking on nothing and that does not do the pump any good.

Cheers

Also put a smear of oil on the thread and if fitted rubber sealing ring of the filter so it is easier to remove next time. Wink

Also engine should be at operating temperature not just warm so the oil drains fully from the top end.

And don't be tempted to fit the plug finger-tight so you can stop it dripping whilst you empty the oil-pan with a view to tightening it up later. Many people have done that and regretted it too.

In the same way, remember to put the sump bolt in before filling it back up (it happens). Mr. Green
