Overheated, or has the head gasket blown causing the coolant to become pressurised with exhaust gas?

Squeeze your rubber radiator hoses as it is spitting coolant, if they are rock hard, you are probably looking at a blown head gasket

Changing the thermostat is the last bastion of those who don't know what the hell is wrong with their engine. Which hole exactly is water coming out of? The three I can think of would be on the water pump, on the neck of the radiator next to the radiator cap and in the expansion tank.

If it's loosing fluid without overheating it will normally be the radiator cap if you are very lucky or what stinkwheel said if you're not.

Sounds like your water pump seal has gone - they normally have a bleed/drain to stop the engine casing filling with steaming hot water and destroying the bearings. Don't think a rad caps going to help!

Thermostat will be somewhere before the hose going to the top of the radiator in the engine.

Easy way of testing it is to keep your hand on the top hose and feel it warm up fairly quickly, after the engine has warmed the water jacket up first.

Check the cooling fan works as well. I shorted the wires going to the switch together to test it before i ran the engine to see if the switch worked.

Most water pumps are shaft driven from the engine. On the shaft there are two seals - one to keep the oil in the engine and the other to keep the water in the pump. There's a gap between the two seals, and in that gap there is generally a drain hole. Then, if either or both of those seals go, the fluid dribbles out of the drain (onto your back tyre Smile ) instead of building up and contaminating the other side.

Usually what happens is the shaft gets worn/pitted, both seals go and you get an emulsion dripping out of the hole. It'll drip constantly but more so with the engine running.

Don't know which copper washer you mean, sorry!
