I went to the docs today cos I have a long, ongoing back problem.

About 6months ago I pulled a muscle in my back playing on a Wii (Happy Gilmore golf swings style).

It was REALLY sore for about 3/4 weex then settled down. Every so often it would get tight and a bit achy but i put that down to old age Wink

Over the past month it has gotten really bad, really sore and it kills while im out on the bike.
So yeppers, went the dox and he gave me a prescription for anti-inflammatory meds. I explained that this is an on-going problem and that the meds would only temporarily relieve the pain and I need a more permanent solution.
He looked at me with a "whats going on here look" slapped all over his chevy chase.
I helped him along and had a near enuff argument with him just to get referred for physio. The guy was not helpful in the slightest. Even though i explained to him that it really hurts while riding and i cant take the pain any longer.

Has anyone got any cheap alternatives that will get this sorted quickly?

Lets see how long it will take for me to get a physio appointment.

Hope your back gets better soon.

Please know, I'm not having a go, just pointing thing out from a different angle. . . . .

I've had a bad on-going neck problem for years. I get spells of a nasty pain that go's all down my shoulder and arm. I belive it was caused by sleeping in the same postion for years.

I have never been to see a doctor about this, but instead paid to see a Chiropractic. Who, physically treated my neck and gave me physio. It really helped.

You should perhaps be avoiding all the activities that agrovate your back problem until it has settled down. Some muscel injuries take months if not longer to repair . . . . . take 'intercostal' for example (all the physio in the world won't help).

Reffering a patient is not something that GP's do at the drop of a hat. I'm not saying your problem is not bad - cos I have no idea about that.

Anyway . . . Did you ask why he didn't reffer you?

My GP is on holiday so there was a cover doc who i saw.

I didnt ask him because everytime i have been to the dox i have had to ask for the treatment i want instaed of it being suggested.
If the roles were reversed and a patient come to see me, told me that it has been a problem for 6 months, medication didnt work i would send them for physio with-out prescribing the same medication which didnt have any effect.

I know your not havin a go, no worries.

Im just pissed off at the crap level of service that i have received from nearly every GP i have visited.

Spend the cash on a private osteopath

I've got a lower back strain cause by a low disc wearing unevenly - and every now and again it locks me up.
Costs me £30 a visit. She knocks living hell out of me and a day or so later I'm right as rain.

More doctor bashing.

There probably aren't any quick solutions, cheap or expensive. Bad backs are very common and are often longstanding problems as you've found out.

If the tablets work, great. If not, go back. If you don't trust your doctor, you need to get another one.

However long the wait for a physio is, I can guarantee that if everyone with a bad back was referred immediately, it would be more than twice as long.

Why don't you casually drop into conversation who your mam is, I'm sure they will take care of you better then. Wink

You need to look at ways you can help yourself with back pain. The doctor you saw was probably fed up of people with back injuries - and yes, they do mostly just prescribe pain killers or anti-inflammatories.

Start thinking about how you are sitting, think about how you use your back picking up items etc. Are you exercising your back to help yourself?
There are plenty of articles online about exercises you can do (and you would probably just be shown these by a physio) - have a go, see if any work.
