so, after popping onto zero one airsoft to have a quick look around, I find that next to the purchase box it now says "requires UKARA registration" before you can purchase any airsoft gun. Reading below you will see you are now required to prove that you have a good reason to buy the weapon Rolling Eyes

I knew the rules were getting stricter on immitation firearms, but I didn't expect it to turn into quite this much hassle. And if you don't choose to go airsofting 3 times every 2 months, you are stuffed, basically.

Yet another example of this frustrating nanny state, and the few ruining it for the many. Thumbs Down

Doubt I will ever bother getting a proper airsoft gun now, too much hassle, and i'm sure thats the desired effect, so well done to those who introduced it. Middle Finger

Hopefully a website will pop up before long, happy to sell you one no questions asked, but I doubt it.

Quote:
Who are UKARA ?

UKARA are a group of Airsoft retailers who have formed an association to protect their businesses and enable the sale of Realistic Imitation Firearms ( RiF's) to the newly restricted recognised and approved customers resulting from the Violent Crime Reduction Act (VCRA).

Why have they set up the UKARA Scheme ?

Under the new act it is the responsibility of the seller to verify that the purchaser is approved and they may be prosecuted if they fail to do this with due diligence.

How will the UKARA scheme do this ?

UKARA has set up an Independent Data Base which will be used to list eligible purchasers and allow UKARA retailer members to check sale recipients are bona fidi.

Who are the eligible purchasers ?

The only groups of persons now allowed to purchase RiF's are Film,TV, Museums, Theatres, Crown Servants, and persons engaged in Re-enactement activities, and airsoft skirmishing. All these purchasers must be over 18 years of age.

How do players become members of an approved game site and eligible to buy RiF's ?

The games site has to record you as a member and preferable issue you with a membership card.
To qualify as an “airsoft skirmisher” you must be a regular player at that game site having attended not less than 3 time in not less than 2 months.

How the rest of the world must be laughing at us. Most other countries you can own a proper firearm, here in this balless shithole it's now become a major frigging deal to own a FVCKING TOY!

And as the screw gets torqued down a bit harder we wait...and wait...and wait to hear the merest squeak of protest from the public. But no, nada...wouldn't say a dicky bird if the govt passed legislation allowing civil servants to come into your home and rape your wives and daughters. Laughing

What a truly PATHETIC population of spineless CVNTS! Laughing

Not much point to the scope unless the rifle has a vortex barrel (rifling to air-spin the BB). Does look nice though. Thumbs Up

It's nice to see there's some fellow airsofters here!

The vast majority of airsoft guns use a system called 'hop-up' which applies backspin to the BB, creating pressure zones above and beneath the BB (much like an aircraft wing). This keeps it going in a straight line until most of it's energy has been lost.

Hop-up reduces velocity but extends range, by 'floating' the BB. It also reduces accuracy. I've never used hop-up, I want my BBs going full whack, especially here where the pussy FPS pretty much makes skirmishing unplayable (which is why I gave up on it). In Japan they have no FPS limit, and the skirmishes over there are a whole different ballgame. It was my favourite sport after biking.

Matt, I get the same effect without losing all my karma and ending up unable to post at all. Credits for the jukebox. Laughing

If having a licence system stops chav kids getting springers through the local markets and scaring the grannies then I'm all for it.

Yes its a pain but its better than getting all your airsoft guns melted because some moron wants to wave around a Beretta in the high street, Then mothers against guns or what ever they call themselves now will then claim that they can eaisily be converted to fire real ammo.

And the trouble is Joe public belives all this nonsence.

I need more info about this airsoft. It sounds awesome! Once went on an exchange to Germany and this guy had some massive airsoft gun. then he said that they went down to the local disused industrial area at the weekends and shot each other. I thought "WTF!" at the time.

And that beast of a gun for £157 delivered... nice!

Well as you probably know, most UK sites adhere to a 328fps +6% rule. You can either have a gun firing a BB with no hop-up at 328fps, or a BB still going 328fps with hop-up on.
For the sake of short-range accuracy, I would choose no hop-up. But the benefits of hop-up over a much longer range far outweigh the disadvantages.
Any velocity lost by applying hop-up - which to be fair is negligible - can be made up again by simply upgrading your weapon back up to 328fps.
The popular addition of a small-bore barrel adds a few FPS and increases accuracy.

In my experience of airsofting, hop-up really only degrades accuracy when you turn it up too far to 'float' a BB over a further distance than can be attained with the hop-up set to fire the BB in a straight line.

Where do you guys all do this? Are you all members of clubs, or do you just get together with mates in woods for example?

I've done it on disused land (a derelict farm) with a few mates, and at proper skirmish sites. You didn't used to need to be a member, you just turned up and paid the green-fee.

The problem with all the UK sites I've tried is they don't have a bloody clue how to run a decent game, it's all "you lot stay there and defend, you lot attack". Combined with the piss-poor velocity limits it makes for a sh!te game.

The Japanese always play 'Capture the Flag', which puts both teams on the move with the objective being to toot the other team's airhorn first. With good FPS that makes for a very intense game.
