 Posted: 00:46 - 14 Jan 2008 Post subject: Nocturnal Motivation... |
 |
|
This is a weird one.... I'm like 99% of britons, I want to get fit, I want to get stuff done and I want to do this that n the other, but I, like 99% of others lack the physical motivation to do it. I want it, I have all the motivation mentally in terms of what it would achieve etc.. i.e want to get fit to improve my stunt riding.. so I can see the benefits etc just can't seem to get myself to actually do anyrthing about it.
Anyways, point of this post, I seem to be very nocturnal.... at night I feel much more motivated to do something, at night I feel up for going for a run or sorting out something I've been putting off for ages etc... but it's too late to actually do anything about so the motivation is pointless and wasted..... then in the morning I feel knackered again and can barely be arsed to get out of bed let alone train/do stuff and by time I get home from work I just end up sat in front of PC until bed time.
Is anyone else like this or been like this and know how to change it.... before anyone says just do stuff at night, I can't cos I start work at 7:30 in the mornings so can't exactly start something at midnight I think that having sleep problems and always being knackered doesn't help at all. ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

Force yerself When I was training for P Company it would not be unusual for me to be doing a 6 mile run at 12 at night. It may look odd to others but I'm of the opinion if its good for you then fuck what others think. |

Does that describe your symptoms? Not sure if it will help, but I found it reassuring to know I have a recognised syndrome. ____________________ mattsprattuk wrote: but at least the lifan could do like 104mph in 3rd gear |

I match all of that actually... it's weird because I've been like this for years, I've always believed it to be insomnia BUT when I get to sleep I have no problems staying asleep (usually) and then I can't wake up on time for work..
Now, heres the thing.. if I take time off work (which I often use my holiday for as I don't actually go on holiday) and just stay at home, I completely change... I go to bed at 2am and get up quite late, and I rarely struggle to get to sleep at that time... if anything my ideal bed time is about 1/2am! but I can't really do this because of work at 7am. I always seem to see 1am no matter what time I get into bed.
I also find sleeping tablets do sweet FA.
so yeah it does sound very similar, and I'll speak to my doctor about it soon.. but.... what will it achieve? can't see how its fixable and my work won't "accept" it as a valid excuse for being late or knackered in the mornings.... ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

Done some more reading on DSPS, and it sounds 100% like me... I'm going to go see the Dr next week or so to find out more... will have to speak to my dad as well, he won't stop going on at me that I "can't sleep" because I eat the wrong stuff or I do this wrong or I drink too much fizzy drinks (considering I gave fizzy drinks up about 3 months ago now................................) would be good to have a recognised problem confirmed by Dr, rather than insomnia which my dad seems to think is easily solvable... it won't change anything, but it might shut him up a bit ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

Not watching TV or going on the computer after 11pm.
Having a relaxing bath.
Hot chocolate/horlicks works really well as well, though I expect you have probably tried this before. |

Bless you all.
Its simply the standard diurnal rythm shifting out of sync. Circadian rythms are NEARLY 24 hours. In nocturnal its 23 hours, diurnal 25 (usually).
Human entrainment is light.
Turn the lights off and force yourself to bed early if it bothers you. Why do you think they have lights on/off in prisons/military?
Normally we'd do everything in the daylight while we could see. Ie 6-10 summer, 9-5 winter.
Ive got an exam that (if i could be arsed) id have to learn all this crap, choosing other topics instead from it. But i know enough about it.
In short, if you keep an animal in completely DD (Dark:Dark) cycles it will eventually free run, and its subjective mid day with advance an hour every day. So it will be most active at 12pm, then 1pm, then 2pm etc. Nocturnal animals are the opposite, losing an hour a day.
If you want to sleep better, get up earlier, get in the sun, go to bed early in the dark. FORCE YOURSELF.
Usually aided by forcing yourself to do exercise in the day.
At present my rythms are fucked, and im not going to sleep til 7 or getting up till 3. Should be fun with a 9 oclock exam friday.
Insomnia is always exacerbated by nothing to get up for, hence later sleep, so later arousal, so later sleep. Constant cycle.
Just force yourself to do SOME exercise, FORCE yourself to get into bed ~12 with the lights off. FORCE yourself to get up earlier. After a few weeks it will sort itself out. Alot harder to do this time of year, and if you actually have a social life. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

Yeah I can relate to the above posts.
Nearly got kicked out of college cos I wasn't turning up to my morning lessons, just couldn't drag my arse out of bed. This was exacerbated by my absolutely god awful diet of norralot leaving me with barely any energy whatsoever.
These days, I only need to get up early twice a week, as I work at the SPCA. I'm just grateful that it's a volunteer organisation and so my constant lateness isn't really something they can complain about. They're just thankful I turn up at all.
This is one of the reasons I'm reluctant to apply for jobs that start in the morning, which drastically decreases my job choices.
Tried doing loads of stuff about it, including hot baths, warm milk, horlicks, staying up all night and the next day, forcing myself into bed, moving my alarm clocks out of reach, drinking loads of water before bed time... Bah. Nothing. It's beautifully easy to just switch my alarm off and go back to sleep for a few more hours.
Sparks, if you do figure out something that works, it'd be good if you post it up on here. ____________________ The tiger who came for a pint |

Bonny, I have no idea what you just said but for what its worth.. I've been like this for many, many, many years (since I was a kid and it's never changed) and I have been working daily for 5 years now with early mornings ALL the time, I am also in an active job so am physically active all day every day (maybe not enough to get me super fit, but "enough") so I see no reason why I should be like this.... I can't see it being a problem with sun and darkness because I am usually in the light alll day then in the dark at evenings/night if that makes sense, so if you mean get to associate dark with sleep then already am? ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

Sort of. Artificial light still entrains you. Weird if you do get up early. But seriously FORCE yourself into bed.
And turns out i should of revised rythms, damn question spotting Ended up doing a disjointed rant about diving as id half covered it. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

To be honest I read that as another fu[king excuse so you can still have the problem but feel pleased with yourself that its not your fault!
Every body has sleep problems on occassions, christ knows I had them long enough.
Can you imagine 20 years ago telling your employer that your late for work because you've got DSPS. You'd be laughed out the door with your P45.
Personally, I'm a night person if I do not take responsibility for my life. I can match all those symptoms, easily. Then again, I took the Sun's 'are you depressed test' and passed with flying colours (technically according to that rag I am clinically depressed, can you imagine a rag like the Sun being passed about the under educated classes, then them all suddenly believing their depressed becasue the fucking Sun told them).
Sleep is one of those things, along side the being to tired after work (but awake enough to play PC games all night), that is simly something you have to take responsibility for. The answer is simple, apply some self discipline and force yourself into a routine. No doctor or pill can do that for you. You have to do it.
I hate these articles that give you a label to apply to yourself because, in essence, your too lazy or mindfucked to help yourself. Its much easier to wear the label, proudly, and say hey its not my fault.
When I'm training at full tilt (i.e. running 3 times a week, kickboxing and the gym) on top of work, on an average of 6-7 hours a sleep a night, I sleep like a fucking baby ! Real fatigue, when you've exhausted the body and it needs the rest, work wonders for your sleep pattern, as does pressure to be up in the morning (i.e. to save your job). |
