What year is it, there were several models.

Most of them suffer from the carb O rings degrading, letting fuel through and making the bike really rich. Apart from that they are pretty good bikes.

I had one (a GK76) and it was the best 400 I've ridden IMO although I've not riden a ZXR, RVF or CBR so cant compare it against them.

Definitely depends which model it is.

The GK73a (big round googly eyes) I had had some electrical problems, a new reg-rec sorted that... A great handling bike and really pokey once you get it up the revs. It certainly wasn't an easy ride compared to my CBR400 which will pull away at much lower revs and less likely to stall.

*Reminisces*

Awwww, lovely bike. So pretty. So much fun.

I'd keep it standard. Heres my old 76.

Definaly keep it standard, although if you crash it they do make good street fighters due to the up and over frame.

you may want to sign up to 400greybike.co.uk as well, there are some very knowledgeable guys on there.

Mine 1991 76a:

My GK73 was a proper wrist-ripper as a first bike. Very 'highly strung' I think is the best description. Laughing

Never really had too many problems with mine, though admittedly I didn't have it for that long.

Spares can be a bitch, as with all the grey bikes.

And another vote for www.400greybike.co.uk Thumbs Up

The gixxer 4 was never a UK bike, so can be worse than most, however robinsons foundry in Canterbury can get hold of most stuff.

Agree, big Thumbs Up for Foundry. A guy at work was a mechy there for 20 years, so I can pretty much get anything cost price from them, and have him fit it mates-rates.

i got it for 50 quid off a friend. it was a non-runner but once i put new spark plugs ( £9 each Shocked ) and 2 spark plug caps ( £30 pounds each ) in it ran fine. i also drained the carbs and put some fresh petrol in the tank Laughing , and as for a real bike im only 17 but i have had motocross and enduro bikes and bought to sell and made a tidy profit on each of them. Thumbs Up

Thanks for your views looking forward to hearing some more!
