Any suggestions for a complete motorcycle cam for the likes of trackdays and my forthcoming France trip on the bike? I'm not wanting to spend hundreds so the cheaper the better, albeit I do want one that records good quality footage. I've seen the little Tony hawk 15FPS helmet cam but I'm not impressed.

I'm in the UK, Leeds area, so links to websites or local shop addresses would be most appreciated.

Most systems I have searched for and looked at on the web are 500pounds +..... Sad

Oregon scientific ATC camera - retail about £80, buy a 2gb memory card for it, get about an hours footage, half decent fps and res and its a stand alone camera, no need to hook it up to an actual video recorder like most do.

Get on the net and search for oregon.

Bugger it ill do the work for you

https://www.oregonscientific.co.uk/prod_allterraincamera.htm

Comes with handlebar mount and helmet mount, can either buy direct or some of the shops listed in their stockists section sell it for cheaper, or look on the internet.

While you've done the work for him, your searching has found what is, in my opinion, a pretty terrible camera for the money.
It has a good spec, but the image on a lot of them is very wobbly.

You can get an idea of what's going on, but viewers may get a bit sea sick.

Search on here for my views of the situation.

Surely that would be from people not securing it properly so it wobbles and vibrates too much - bit of cloth wrapped round it and a bit of work securing it properly would fix it.

Would that be your own personal experience about the oregon or is it just your opinion? I've been looking at them for some time, but as most people say, a bullet cam rig and DV recorder seem to yeild the best results. I think G has campaigned against the toy cameras for a while now Wink

Experiances ive had havent been on the bike yet, lack of a decent day and dont want to video an hours worth of dreary grey tarmac and oil spills everywhere.

Its been friends car where it was ok, to see if it worked, just waiting for a nice day to come along and some free time to give it a proper blast.

But to be honest, whats expected from a £80 recorder compared to the camera + recorder setup thatd cost considerably more than £80. And if anything happened, id rather smash £80 worth of gear than several hundred pounds worth.

Sorry I was right with you until the word "records" then realised I had totally the wrong end of the stick. Doh!

Vee some Karma for you. Great find there. I never considered ASDA for electricals. Gonna head over to the store in the morning and have a good look at the DVR 710 and others they may have. Thanks again.

Same to all for your recommendations. I had a look at the Oregon and viewed some footage on Youtube. It does indeed seem to have a 'wave' effect on the footage. Almost as though the motion reduction is over compensating. Shame really because its an ideal shape and size for the bike.

Titz/faddius:
I own one. It's nothing to do with the way it's secured, it can be secured really well and produce crap results. It does seem that some people get better ones than others; however I can usually straight away tell if one’s been used because items in the distance, such as houses, look like they’re made out of jelly.
When the ATC2k was first announced I did have high hopes for it – I had even emailed them when they released the first version asking if they were going to release one with the specs of the 2k.

If you don’t want to use the camera ‘helmet mounted’, there loads of options.
I’ve often gone on about one similar (not the same) the vivtar one listed above, which weighs in the same as the ATC and gives much better footage for the same money. As I mentioned above, search on here for places I’ve gone over the same subject quite a few times before.

Despite what Graham88 suggests, for similar money you can get much better recording devices.
DV based one are always going to suffer when mounted on a bike – same with HD based.

For the bullet camera part I got one from 4kam a few months back and it seems ok. https://www.4kam.com/helmet_sport_cameras.htm

I would advise not to go for the recorder option they do with it as the one I got was a Goodmans GPDR and wasn't impressed with it. Eventually sent it back as it kept turning itself on and off for no reason. Also the recording time on the memory card supplied was very low.

I'll prob look into getting a camcorder with an AV input for it sometime. Good thing with th bulet cam is that it could be mounted in most places on the bike by fixing it to the small stand which came with it.

Well I ended up at Maplins and saw, then subsequently purchased this

https://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=221864&doy=22m1

Charged it up and just got it all set up on the bike, which wasn't easy as the Daytona's fairings are all angles and my screen is an aftermarket black one Sad

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'll post some footage if the sun shines tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Now the two digi cams look interesting, a mate has the Oregon and its not the best. Had a look at the spec of the cams and couldn't find how long it records for.

Also is it waterproof? Only need to know as I am looking for a dual purpose one, bike days and for my windsurfing speed runs at West Kirby. Thumbs Up

The ATC should be splash proof, not sure it'd do so well immersed in water. It does have rubber rings to seal all the opening bits and shows it being used on canoes etc, I believe.

The ATC2k is a bit of a mixed bag.

Its straightforward to use and far more robust than a dv cam, whilst being less hassle than a decent bullet cam setup.

I haven't had enough worthwhile days to truely figure mine out, but I don't think the wobble is directly down to how its mounted, it looks like the way the data from the cmos sensor is written to the card which just amplifies any vibrations in the camera. Whilst using it as a headcam I found the automatic exposure to be more of an issue though. It seems to base the lighting conditions by whatevers dead center of view, if its looking at the sky, the footage ends up far too dark.

The sound quality is nigh useless if its in any windblast, if its shielded its passable.

Set it up carefully and the results are passable and plenty clear enough, just don't expect to make your own ghostrider dvd with it.
