I remember when I took my first CBT, I went into one of those boxes. My instructor told me to wheel my bike back out of it and told me I could get points for that. Whoops!
On my commute through London I do see a lot of motorbikes using them. I personally don't *remembers instructor*. |

You are allowed to use these red boxes as per the highway code, but only if you are unable to stop safely before the white line.
So, if that really awkward cop wants to do you for it, tell him you couldn't stop safely before the white line because:
A) The car behind you was too close to you and you were worried they might hit you.
B) You thought you saw an oil patch as you were braking, and so stopped braking momentarily so as to not cause an accident therefore causing you to stray into the red box.
C) You were momentarily distracted by a bird hitting you on the helmet.
Of course, none of this helps if the cop sees you filter to the front of a queue of traffic and pull into the red box!! ____________________ Previous: Aprilia Habana Retro 50cc (beauty), Yamaha SR125 (fell apart), Honda XR125 (nippy little commuter), Honda SLR650 (Geewhizz), Yamaha Diversion 900S (Smoooooth) written off courtesy of a stupid escaped horse.

You were going too fast to stop for the traffic lights?
You mean both STOP lights? The Nice big Amber one and then the Pretty red one?
Waoo...
I hope you like buses and trains.
I think you need to have pedals and look like this: ____________________ W-ireless A-rtificial L-ifeform L-imited to O-bservation P-eacekeeping and E-fficient R-epair |

i use them all the time.
i have been told off once though. I was out the back of the old bailey and one of the motorcycle cops who was on traffic direction duty told me not to use them in future and it would have been points if he wasnt so busy. i nodded politely and carried on. ____________________ Current : '08 Yamaha FZ1s

My CBT instructor said it's basically down to the individual as to wether to use them or not.
Technically you're not allowed to but told us he does all the time.
Would be a fail on a test obviously, but so are certain other things we all do... ____________________ CBT - 05/05/07. DAS - 07/01/08. Previous: CG125 Current: CB500. Both black! |

Advanced stop lines. Some signal-controlled junctions have advanced stop lines to allow cycles to be positioned ahead of other traffic. Motorists, including motorcyclists, MUST stop at the first white line reached if the lights are amber or red and should avoid blocking the way or encroaching on the marked area at other times, e.g. if the junction ahead is blocked. If your vehicle has proceeded over the first white line at the time that the signal goes red, you MUST stop at the second white line, even if your vehicle is in the marked area. Allow cyclists time and space to move off when the green signal shows.

In London they have said they will be fitting new cameras specifically for catching people using these boxes, as well as cycle lanes with solid lines marking them, with a view to prosecuting.
I use them though. It's self-preservation if you tend to filter as most queueing drivers only see whats in fromnt of their window-pillars. I wouldn't bitch if I got collared though. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
