God love 'em. Slight problem as they all seem to have a picture of a push bike in them. On the plus side it discourages cars using them , (mostly).

Still anyone else feel that using the push bike box is fair game/ a bit dodgy / wrong? Anyone suffered any dire consequences as a result? Maybe an irrate plod of even worse an irrate envirocyclist?

You can technically get done for going past the line on a red light, but you'd have to get a pretty damn arsey cop to do you for that.

I always use them where possible.

I remember when I took my first CBT, I went into one of those boxes. My instructor told me to wheel my bike back out of it and told me I could get points for that. Whoops! Laughing

On my commute through London I do see a lot of motorbikes using them. I personally don't *remembers instructor*.

Cyclists don't actually stop for red lights - as eny fule kno - so motorcycles are obliged by law to filter to the front of the queue and use these boxes.

Honest.

You are allowed to use these red boxes as per the highway code, but only if you are unable to stop safely before the white line.

So, if that really awkward cop wants to do you for it, tell him you couldn't stop safely before the white line because:
A) The car behind you was too close to you and you were worried they might hit you.
B) You thought you saw an oil patch as you were braking, and so stopped braking momentarily so as to not cause an accident therefore causing you to stray into the red box.
C) You were momentarily distracted by a bird hitting you on the helmet.

Of course, none of this helps if the cop sees you filter to the front of a queue of traffic and pull into the red box!! Razz

I always used them, why not?

If a copper is going to be that petty then they really would have power issues.

i use them all the time.
i have been told off once though. I was out the back of the old bailey and one of the motorcycle cops who was on traffic direction duty told me not to use them in future and it would have been points if he wasnt so busy. i nodded politely and carried on.

My CBT instructor said it's basically down to the individual as to wether to use them or not.

Technically you're not allowed to but told us he does all the time.

Would be a fail on a test obviously, but so are certain other things we all do... Wink

Advanced stop lines. Some signal-controlled junctions have advanced stop lines to allow cycles to be positioned ahead of other traffic. Motorists, including motorcyclists, MUST stop at the first white line reached if the lights are amber or red and should avoid blocking the way or encroaching on the marked area at other times, e.g. if the junction ahead is blocked. If your vehicle has proceeded over the first white line at the time that the signal goes red, you MUST stop at the second white line, even if your vehicle is in the marked area. Allow cyclists time and space to move off when the green signal shows.

Thumbs Up

Which is virtually the same as the "go through on amber if you think you may cause an accident stopping" rule when the lights are turning red.

"Motorists, including motorcyclists, MUST stop at the first white line reached if the lights are amber or red "
MUST STOP! Clear?

"If your vehicle has proceeded over the first white line at the time that the signal goes red, you MUST stop at the second white line, even if your vehicle is in the marked area"
Means if you are following traffic through the junction as like you would at a Box Junction.

Amber means STOP! It does not mean think about stopping or slow down.

Enjoy

Did that last night, the geezers in the patrol car didn't bat an eyelid.

I wouldn't like to try it in front of el Traffic Police though.

In London they have said they will be fitting new cameras specifically for catching people using these boxes, as well as cycle lanes with solid lines marking them, with a view to prosecuting.

I use them though. It's self-preservation if you tend to filter as most queueing drivers only see whats in fromnt of their window-pillars. I wouldn't bitch if I got collared though.

Meh, amber means keep going as long as you can make it clearly before it goes red, with added throttle, especially if we are in heavy traffic circumstances (i.e. no vehicles approaching the other set of lights at speed).

Red means get to the front, even if you go through the white line at the front. The cycle boxes are just a bonus.

Red means keep going when I'm on the pushbike, (as long as its safe) which is at least twice a day at the moment. I encounter 16 sets of lights on the way to work (excluding the contraflow Rolling Eyes ), and only routinely stop at four of them.

Makes you think how free flowing traffic could be without them.
