Does anyone on this here forum do any off shore rig work. Ive been looking into and i am really interested. I understand you have to work 2 weeks at a time or something similar to that. Also that it is exceptionally hard to get a place on a rig.

Im looking at doing a welding course at college as i need something in my CV that is of any use. Level 1 Level 2 And Possibly coded. Im turning 19 in april and really need to start doing something with my life.

So i was wondering if anyone could give me some inside information into the business. Tips for getting taken on and other stuff. What the pay and conditions on board are like.

I do rig work, currently 2 weeks on 2 off, although will shortly be 2 on 3 off.

I do remember the last welder we had on crew left because he was always downmanned and only worked about 2 weeks in 8 months(still on full pay though) as hot work is rare when the plant is working, he just got bored.

And getting started is difficult, its a case of who you know Wink

Giving birth, breast feeding babies and rearing them till they leave is harder I imagine.

Its 12 hrs a day 7 days a week for as long as the hitch lasts.

It can be tough when the shit hits the fan but it's not hammer, hammer, hammer all the time.

Drill floor work today is much less labour focused due to the implementation of 'cyber' drilling packages.
This is where robotics are used to do the repetitive tasks. Automated drill pipe handling etc.
Big big bucks to buy and maintain but at $50,000,000 to drill a well it's 'easy money'.

And all the folk out there hooning around on bikes using the product make it all worth it. Laughing

I've been offshore, I worked on the turbine/ generator assembly that powers the rig. Worked on the ninean south platform and ninean central platform, just between shetlands/norway. I did a 5 day course that included fire fighting, first aid, general not pissing around this is serious stuff type training and the dreaded underwater helicopter escape training. I did 3 weeks on and weeks off money was very fuckin good (drew £1040 a week) but i was employed by a muppet company who was employed by the wood group. the work dried up and there was no chance of getting on with the main contractor. it's not what you know its who you know.

This is all well and dandy, but i couldnt give that much of a crap about the money. I just want a job that i think i would enjoy. Im fed up of jobs that i despise. So come on people.

Like you said its not what you know, its who you know.

its the way of the world.

The other ive never talked to, hes my sisters friends father. Im looking to get a foot into the ladder. But as you have already said. Its not what you know, its who you know.

It's like any other job then.

But if you have the credentials and the interviewer fancies you then you have a better chance.

The deal is really, "I do not want to hire a Muppet cause he will make me look bad." So if you keep trying you get in. Even with a water well drilling mob. An employer only need to know you can do the job he want you to do.

Who you know works too but it's not a rule.

With a long term view also consider starting as a steward, about 30k a year, I know 4 guys who managed to make the switch to core crew after 4 yrs of stewarding.

Get as many tickets as you can for things like banksman, always helps, and do your bosiet training (will cost about £700).

Remember drug testing is mandatory so no funny fags Wink

Also don't be afraid to do ad hoc work, I know guys who have worked 10/15 years purely ad hoc and never spent more than a few weeks without work Thumbs Up
