Hi,

Is it possible to get dents of of an exhaust?
My old one was damaged when it fell over in the van (doh!) creating two indents on the can.
They are both quite smooth, not a sharp indent.

Is there anyway to pull them out at all?

I tried to take pics of them but they didnt come out so well on the camera phone (normal camera is recharging).

you're right you can't see propely!

Most dents can be pushed out, but usually from the inside. You may be able to attatch a slide hammer, but you'll be looking at welding doing things like that.

The hard bit will be matching the finish of the repaired area to the rest of the can.

If its riveted then it may be better to disassemble the can to give better access.

*Might* be better to fit a new sleeve to the can if its round.

Get a body spoon
that would pop out easy
or
Get a body pin put in and pull out with the pin
but thats a bit harder.

If it is a very slight dent you may be able to coax it out using a strong magnet
Assuming the material is magnetic, if it is alluminium you arent using a magnet. Smile

Body repair shops use vaccum sucktion cups to pull dents out of car doors, a smaller sucktion cup would work, but without a vacuum the pressure needed to pull the dent out would be more than what was needed to make it worse, so you would end up with a bigger dent pushing the sucktion cup on. Smile

if u took it off and took it into a body repair shop they may do it for nowt for ya there and then if it is a 30 second job, especially if u happened to roll up on your dinner, if not they would give you an idea on cost. Thumbs Up

Had a few come round when i was tool making, sat around on dinner as a guy wandered up asking how much it would cost for a drill to be sharpened. Someone would jump up and do it there and then for them for nowt. Same with something that needed just rough machining or a quick 2 min job

Works best in summer when they are sat outside though Thumbs Up

if u dont ask, u dont get, cant hurt for asking. Smile

I could see someone pulling a large-area depression out of a thin large panel with a magnet if the metal isn't stretched, but there's no way in hell you are going to pull a dent out of a cylinder with a magnet.

Sure it will. I've popped loads of dents out of aircraft.

How do you then get the magnet off the exhaust?

Maybe he`s using an electromagnet, switch it on and then switch it off, simple as that.-Jockey.

Basically the pdr is the best way
using a long thin piece of metal
https://www.i-car.com/graphics/about_icar/current_events/advantage/2004/advantage_online_0719/full_size/fig_02.JPG
and you massage the dent out, not hit it gently massage around it,
any thing of that sort should work i think

Wooden or plastic sticks work well.
You should heat up the damaged area to make sure the work hardened bit isn't going to cause the surrounding area to deform. Sharp damage is very hard to work due to stretching and aluminium doesn't have a memory like steel so it takes a bit more work to get the shape right.
