How about neither?

Pick up a cheap MX style 50cc bike (DT50 type thing), which will do about 50 when you derestrict it, won't cost a fortune when you crash it, and won't loss nearly as much money as a shiney faired 50cc bike.

However the chances are you've made up your mind and just want everyone to say "Yeah, get the RS50/ TZR50 cos they're really great bikes". But they're not.

Believe it or not, this forum isn't actually /that/ tarty. Ie people on here at least value a bike's performance compared to how it looks.

The two bikes you mentioned are sold on looks, they don't offer much over bikes that cost 5x less. Also, a lot of people on here have been where you are and learned from their mistakes.

I expect you've got your heart set on a sporty looking bike, so choose the one that you think looks the best. Believe it or not the difference between 50 and 60 miles an hour makes very little difference; if you get a 160+mph bike in a few years time you'll understand how insignificant it is.

Personally I'd just go for a bike you can have some fun on and not loose a lot of money on, so you can save the money for a year's time when it will actually get you a better bike, not just a shinyer one Smile.

yeah just get a cheap 50, as soon as you are 17 you will want to sell it as you will be sick of it as you will want something faster by then. Mr. Green

50cc PAH.

I had my heart set on a sports bike, so waited till I was 17 and bougth a proper bike, ZXR400, 18 now and going onto an R6.

I think Ste will agree there to, juut either get the cheap 50 scrambler (you'll have more fun off roading as well) or wait till your 17 and do your full test!

well, a 50cc is not a good performer and never will be

so get something like a derbi Senda 50, they look smart, dirt cheap, and will teach you shit loads about bike control especially if you have a piss about off road as well as on.

and when you crash it, it'll prob pick up and ride off!

Well no 50cc is going to win races. So read the comments above. You're best with a 50cc dirtbike type thing, get your test sorted once you're 17 then get a proper bike Very Happy

For a cheap 50 crosser type thing (which is what I'd do) get a Yamaha DT50.

For a bit more 'respek' get a Motohispania Furia50 supermotard thingy. Crosser with road tyres and nippy. Bit more cash though..

For ultimate respect at 16 get an expensive RS50 etc. Trouble is, you'll probably crash it Confused

You pays your money you takes your choice Very Happy

It somewhat worries me with these Young 16 year olds that they *have* to have a bike that can do 60mph or whatever. Don't be in so much of a rush to crash/lose your license/ whatever.

You WILL crash a 50 or 125, especially if you have this burning desire to go as fast as you can as soon as you can. I don't want you to become a statistic. Please please please stick to a restricted bike at first. You may believe that you are skilled and you can take on the world but this is a bad attitude.

When I first had my NS125 I was absolutely bricking it! I had the full protective gear etc and was licensed to ride it, but I was still scared of it. This fear kept me alive for the first few years of this biking life. Don't get me wrong, I didn't ride slowly everywhere but I had a healthy respect for the bike, the line I was treading and the near-ness of the near misses I had.

In my experience those that do not have this fear and ride end up either

A)with a charmed life and have several near misses and survive (rare) - usually end up as MotoGP champion or something

B) in and out of hospital (I've known a few)

C) you can guess. (luckily I've not known any but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. )

PLEASE take it easy.

Oh and get a DT50, you'll be happier with it and won't cost loads to fix if you crash it.

Stay rubber side down. Smile

Can it dogfood face, Smile

I was just feeling atypically empathetic Razz

and I don't want Tony and his cronies to legislate us out of existence.

I am also a little stressed with the whole "What 50 should I get? which one wil get me into hospital or into a slammed Nova with 19" Rims quickly?

I also see many deathwish ped boys up my street. I don't ride with the utmost personal safety in mind, but these lads think that they are indestructable. If one of them happens to ride around a speed bump on the wrong side of the road (which they do) and he hits my car and is killed, then its I who will have to pay the consequences. I am the one who ends up killing the guy no matter whose fault the accident was.

Plus since when did it hurt to aid our fellow man in the accomplishment of fast and safe motorcycling?

I wouldn't say that the speed of the bike is the problem, but the whole "I'm 16 and I am getting a 60mph bike" is indicative of the entire attitude of the person really. Scary.

I don't want to sound like a lecturing old fart but I was 16 once and I remember having a healthy fear of death/injury/my parents Smile

I'd rather be accused of being boring and trying to prevent injury etc than encouraging insanity. Smile

Don't be such a drama queen Wink If 16year olds want to be on the road then that's up to them matey. Remember, you can't tell a 16 year old anything without them thinking they know it all already. Not meaning to piss on your bonfire but I think you're wasting your time. Much better to let the guys on the CBT training shock 'em with crash photos Cool Anyway - remember that the majority of deaths arising from over-confidence etc is the over 40's. Can't see them listening to your advice (well meant as it is) much.

Thast exactly what I mean.
Oh well, I guess we're just going to end up with bikes being restricted to 100bhp or some other draconian legislation then.

Agreed, if any more restrictions come in, I'll be looking at going abroad.

France for instance has great roads, less police etc

oh, but arent they the ones that came up with the 100bhp restriction in the first place?

Okkk where else can we all go? Laughing

I personally got a 50cc scooter which wasn't the fastest of things, nor was it the coolest thing... But it did what I wanted it to do:

1) got me on the road at 16
2) transported me places
3) gained me one years no claims for when i turned 17.

Looking back I wish I had got a scrambler style 50cc, but at the time I couldn't find one for the right price.

My advice to you would be to look on ebay for either a DT50 or a TS50, there is also an RX50 but they are more expensive.

The DT's and TS50's are capable of between 50-55mph and the RX50 will do 60mph.

I seriously wouldn't bother with a sports 50, they are unreliable and expensive.

Remember if you buy any 50cc new you are going to be loosing almost half the money on resale. So try getting an older bike.

Nice - this 16 year old kiddy has at least taken a bit of time to attempt to obtain some information regarding his prospective purchase and you just pigeon hole him into the sort of bracket that there is a possibility that he may want to disassociate himself from. Personally I thought MarJay's advice was spot on, whether it's fully taken in or not doesn't matter, it's still a good point well made and ultimately may steer MotorMAD (OK, I'll admit the moniker is a bit spurious Rolling Eyes ) in a more sensible/suitable direction.
