I have a Polo 1.4 which i just serviced, i got a new sump plug washer but its copper which i later found out aint so good and to my suprise the sump plug is leaking.
I really cant be arsed taking it out and fitting a different metal washer, what would be a good bodge to seal, i can unscrew it a little bit maybe enough to jam some instant gasket in ?.
It doesnt matter too much as the car is old and crap, but i still want to be able to do a future oil change 10k down the road if the car gets there.

Whack the copper washer on a gas burner until it's red hot.

i know that now, but to do that id have to take it off, thus draining the oil out again.

If you quick and stick a finger over the hole while removing the washer and let the oil drop into a clean jug you shouldnt drop too much and you can just pour it back in.

I have got away in the past on my cars undoing the sump plug abit cleaning up the area and applying a small bead of mastic. Let it go off for a while then nip it up. When you want to undo it just run a stanly blade around it. bodgey but works Very Happy

Aye you can phanny it together with glue/string/chewing gum etc. Whilst you save up for a new engine when it runs short of oil.
Oh and budget for a repair of the driveway too.

Or 'be' arsed and fix it correctly.

It's folk like you who give motorcyclists a bad image.
Bet you have long hair too.... Mad

Just drain the oil into a clean container and pour it back into the engine. A washing up bowl makes a decent easy clean container.

It'll take you less time to do this than it will messing around trying to get silicone sealant to stick to an oil drain plug.

Be very careful not to overtighten the sump plug, VW's are notorious for stripping the thread. Timesert sump plug inserts were originally designed for VWs, and come with a VW sump plug as standard.

Copper washers are normally fine, you sure its done up tight enough? Be careful not to strip the threads though! Laughing

Every car I've serviced has had a copper sump washer, never had an issue.

Just repaired the Landy gearbox and changed its fluids. Engine, gearbox and transfer box all have copper washers. No leaks.

I think the problem is with the non-metalic end of the spanner.....

I took the oil out in the end, heated the washer up on the cooker then ran back and put it back in.
I really hope this works, i make so much mess when i change the oil.
