Going to look at a P reg F3 (Thanks Beans) Ninja tomorrow and been doing a little research as to what I should be looking out for. Already found that the brakes are prone to repair and need regular rebuilds, discs can frequently warp, wheel bearings often need attention and the cam chain/tensioner can get a bit rattly on higher mileage engines, athough not a major problem. This example has covered approx 24k.
Was wondering if anyone here owns or used to own one and has got any idea if there's anything else specific to this bike I need to be aware of? Aside from the normal tyres/chain/sprocket and crash damage what else should I keep my eyes peeled for?
Thanks in advance Thumbs Up

oil leak from he sprocket cover (oil seal tends to go, but easy fix)
leak from sump plug. bastard if someone has over tightened and stuffed the thread.
the joins in the exhaust (original system) they rot badly, really they all should have been fitted with a stainless system.
head bearing (notchy steering) and electrics under tail.. they tend to get nice salty water spraying up from the rear wheel, and cause havoc to the cables.
they are good bikes. my old one served me well indeed Very Happy

Hi,

Thats an F3 or F2 ninja the G-models are near enough completly different bikes, 6 pot tokicos removeable subframe etc.

with the F- models look out for all of the above plus the oil cooler under the rad, they take a battering and often rot through. Valve clearances are every 7k so check the history for them being done. Rear shocks seize and are likely to be past its best at 24k.

Okay, thank you both for your help, I must've got a bit confused with the different model terms. F being the first shape, G being more rounded at the front and J with the move to twin front headlights. I'll put some pictures up if I decide to go ahead and buy it. Out of interest how much do you think the above bike would be worth at that age and mileage? (1997 and 24k)

Well this one's advertised at 950 but I'm hoping I can get him down some on that. Not much in the way of tarty bits except for new stainless brake lines, new chain, sprockets brake & fork seals. Going to look at it in an hour or two anyhow so we'll see.

How do you find them that cheap? All of the models on MCN/BikeTrader/eBay seem to be over £1200 as a general rule, even with a much higher mileage than this one you're looking at.

Been to look at the bike and it's pretty clean and tidy, has a crack/hole in the front headlight that could do with replacing but otherwise in good nick. Engine starts and revs smoothly, no funny rattles or knocks, everythings clean with no corrosion or oil leaks and its got two brand new Pirelli Corsa tyres, Akrapovic can and Goodridge braided brake lines front and rear. Gonna test ride it tomorrow and if it all checks out it's mine Smile
And Spike, in my experience Autotrader and the likes are pretty overpriced, people set their asking prices with room for negotiation so you're unlikely to find anything <£1000. Parkers bike guide for this model lists the value as £975 - £1200 depending on condition, so I think this one's a pretty good deal.

Look for the usual things like dead bearings and corrosion etc. Also look for a good garage to get your valve clearance inspections every 4k.
