Not sure if this belongs here.

I am looking for health insurance but know nothing about it, I have asked a firm about a family plan, and they are going to get back to me.

https://www.healthinsurancegroup.co.uk/

But in the mean time, does anybody have health insurance?

What sort of money does it cost?

What sort of things are you covered for?

Does having it automatically mean you can use private hospitals?

Sorry if these questions seem daft, but I have never known anybody with health insurance, or at least never known about it.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

Slightly offtopic, but do you already have a good life insurance, critical illness cover, income protection and pension plan? I my opinion, money spent on these is worth more than that spent on medical insurance in the UK. The NHS, despite all its flaws, still provides the best free and comprehensive health service in the world. For every horror story you read in the papers or on forums, there are thousands of people getting a very decent service from the NHS, who do not shout about it from the rooftops. Also, you can now choose which hospital you want to go to, rather than be forced to go to where is cheapest for the insurance company. Just my Penny Coin Penny Coin.

I am confused now.

The only insurance I have is for my car.

I wasn't looking to try and get private I have no problem with the NHS, they have always been very helpful.

I just want some sort of insurance that covers me if I have an accident and can't work, rather than all this where theres a blame there is a claim nonsense.

I have no idea what sort of policy I need for that.

Any ideas?

Cheers again.

Andy

Income protection will provide you with a salary for the period you are off work or for the rest of your life if ill health prevents you from working. Critical illness cover provides a lump sum payment if you develop a health problem preventing you from ever working again. Life insurance does the obvious. Crtitical illness cover and life insurance can be linked to your mortgage, so that your debts are all paid off and your family is not left with a financial burden, should something unfortunate happen. Alternatively, you could arrange for your family to get paid instead. It is best to get occupation specific cover, so that insurance company cannot refuse to pay up claiming you are still well enough to sell newspapers at the tube station. Talk to an independant financial advisor for more information. Walk away if the financial advisor charges a fee without good reason. They get paid commissions for every package they arrange, and most of them don't charge their clients.

Norwich Union for life insurance. Excellent cover and normally quite cheap premium, includes termincal illness cover which is slightly different than critical illness cover but only slightly. I pay £8 per month for a sum of £125k to be paid to my next of kin on death or to me if i become terminally ill. Policy is in force until 2028 with no change in premium.

Also have mortgage payment insurance which pays out £675 per month should i get sick, suffer an accident or become unemployed and unable to pay my mortage. This is through https://www.britishinsurance.com/ and costs me £11 a month.

The premium goes up the older and more of a risk you become.

Thumbs Up

The big comparison sites have nice, plain english explanations of what things are. Try money supermarket or similar. Dont feel like a div for not knowing, feel smart for trying to plan your life. I know it makes me sound old, but I really do think stuff like this should be taught in schools. Just found a savings account for my 13yr old with a cash card, so he can start practiscing some of the skills you need to run a bank account. Schools should be doing this.

Financial advisors have access to far more plans than most of us would be able to access and research. Do speak to one, even if you do not buy what they recomend.
