correct grease for rear axle

Hi,

What's the recommended grease for rear axles? Last time I refitted my rear wheel I used graphited grease as I was in a hurry and it was all I had. Is this suitable or should I use something else ~ got visons of rapidly wearing components ~

"Correct" grease is likely to be a molybdenum disulphide grease.

Graphited is more suited to leaf springs on olde worlde cars, but it wouldn't cause a problem. Owt's better than nowt.

silkolene red racing grease ftw. Use it alot at work, copper grease for threads and red grease for alot of other aplications.

Red water-resistant grease stinks too. I hate re-loading my grease-gun with that stuff.

Last time I did it I used copper grease, seemed to work fine.

I use anything to hand, the axle isn't a moving part as said its only to stop corrosion and make it easier to remove if needed.

another vote for copper grease, just cos it was around. Iv heard black lithium grease is good though

I just used whatever generic grease was around at the time. I think I ended up going with something that said "multi purpose grease" on the tin.

I've used:
Boat trailer wheel bearing grease (blue)
Lithium (whitish)
Axle/Moly (black)
Valvoline GP (red)
Castrol LM (Lt brown)

& some synthetic stuff....
