hi guys i have a problem with my rs125, the other day the bike was hard to start and when i got it going, it would always stall when i stopped at traffic lights etc, so when i got home i took out the battery and charged it over night and i also took out the spark plug and it was covered in soot, so i got a new plug and put it in but the bike is still very hard to start, and when it does it will idle normally then when i go to pull away it will just stall, i`ve tried adjusting the pilot screw and the air/fuel screw but they don't seem to be having an effect on the idling of the bike,

any ideas what i can try next, or can anyone recommend a good bike mechanic near Blantyre

thanks guys

Hi,

I've also experienced this problem with my Rs125, what plug are you running at the moment?

With the BR10EG I found that if I rode the bike at slow speeds the plug would foul and therefore fail to ignite and cut out. This is because this plug runs cold(er) and is unable to burn all the fuel/oil mix.

What I did was run my bike on a BR8EG this plug burns hotter is less likely to foul at low speeds. HOWEVER, if you do run this plug then don't highly rev the bike, this hot plug WILL burn a hole in your piston if you highly rev the bike. But it will save your bike from cutting out at the traffic lights.

Hope this helps,
Jack

Sooted up plug, you are running too rich.
Whats the air filter like ?
Choke not stuck on is it ?
I would have a look in a manual and find the base setting for the carb and work from that, doing plug chops till you get it right.

Is the choke on the 125's controlled by a small lever under the right hand fairing? If so check it is still connected properly, my RS got stuck at full choke once or twice till I sorted out the problem.

Before you start to incur massive costs, you could stick a colortune in it and check the mixture setting.

Only takes ten minutes.

Sooty plug does indicate over-rich condition though.

As for plug range, I think most RS rider opt for a BR9.

nah still wont fire up,
it seems like it wants to start tho,
the battery ran out of power after about 5 mins of trying to turn the engine over so i put it on charge and the fault light came on indicating a fault on the battery, so i went up to halfords and got a new battery, done everything in the new battery instructions, filled it with the acid, charged it for 2 hours, then put it in the bike and nothing no power when i turn the ignition on, no lights totally dead,

so i put the old battery back and and there was power to the ignition and lights, so i charged the new battery over night and put in this morning and still no power with the new battery

so im about to take it back to halfords and try a get a replacement.

so old battery i get power
new battery no power doh.gif

Earth leak?

What does the multimeter say when it isn't connected to the bike?

well the wonderfull rs125.... brings back memories.
right I had a very simular problem when i had mine. done my nut in! well unfortunately i cant remember the exact setting for the idle screw but look it up and set it to standuard. have u checked your carb? (especially floats) and also if the 2t pump isnt set up right it will either chuck in too much or too little sounds like u got too much? the pump is very easy to set up its got 2 line marks which just need to be lined up. this is becoming an essay just putting down some of the things i tried. can you bump start it and do you have to throttle every time u come to a stop? and how many miles since the last piston change? supposed to be done every 8thou.
just for the record mine turned out to be lack of compression in the end. so if you know any1 with a compression tester just pop it in and have a look. thinking back 100psi is good but should run at 80-90 dont take my word for that thou.
have fun and good luck.

its has a compression of 140 psi, i just changed the pistons and rings at the weekend, also a brand new 34 mm carb turned out to be the reeds in the end but its still stalling when i stop at lights etc and i have to keep the throttle on a bit to keep it from stalling, ill check out the oil pump tomorrow tho.

as for the battery im taking it back to halfords thats 2 batters in a row from there that were goosed, i put a multimeter on them and they both regsiterd zero, and according to the instructions they hold a dry charge and all i needed to do was fill with electrolyite plus give them a 2hr charge.

140 that is good! i know this is a silly question but a lot of the time it usually something very simple. but has to be asked, have you wound the idle screw in yet? and also check the fuel pipe isnt kinking when u put the tank down.

Hi,
sounds like you have almost cracked it!
i had the same problem,
when i installed the 34mm carb, it idled very low.
would cut out now & again.
especially when i had to slow down quickly or at lights!
re-jetted & installed a pipercross vectorcone,
now it doesnt cut out.
like a different bike!
still idles very low though,
but im lead to believe they all do that.
suppose it depends on what pipe/filter jets etc. you have.
good luck!
cheers,
GAZ
