Hey All,

Theres something that i've been pondering over for a while now, (yes i lead a dull life Laughing ) How come motorbikes don't have a gear selector indicator? When i'm out on the bike i've got used to hearing/feeling the tune of the bike, so i rely on that but wouldn't it be much easier if we had a little dial or summin to tell you what gear your in? When i did my CBT the 125 they gave me had one, to be honest i found it useful, so come on then enlighten me, how come they're not fitted as standard????

Cars don't have them either.

Some bikes come with them, but they aren't really a necessity. I don't really see the point in them, it doesn't really help any more toward your day to day riding and it's just another thing for you to be looking at instead of where you're going.

You can add them on, and some bikes now have them stock. Never found them useful.

I have one on my car, standard, and see no use for it .

Acumen make an aftermarket one. I believe it costs about £90.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

EDIT: St3v3 I know it's really puzzling but if you look above here, people missed the point of the topic which I highlighted in order for more people to avoid missing it.

Should I type it a bit slower for ya?

Because bikers are above average inteligence and we do not need gear indicators. Embarassed

Mine has them and some cars too. I always found it a pain in the arse to have to think what gear I'm in.
I could do the RMP/MPH mind shrink but I love my wee screen in the corner that shows a 1 a 2 a 3 a4 a5 or a 6. Laughing

Even after over a year on me little XR125 I still have to sometimes quickly pop it down to 1st and back up again to know I'm in 2nd gear. Not too often though, and never at speed!!

I'd love to have a bike with a gear indicator...

I think its better to not have them as its just another thing to distract you and keep your eyes off the road. Learn instead to feel roughly what gear you're in from your road speed and engine revs and keep your eyes on the road.

I wouldn't mind one on my FZ6.....as said, if I'm coming up to a tight corner I'd like to know what gear to be in to get the power down or even for a quick overtake.

As for the fact that cars dont have them......you only need to just glance at the gear stick, same thing!!

gear indicators = more weight

More things to go wrong

More OEM parts = less profit for the manufacturers

More complexity compared to say a neutral light

Shouldn't you just go round the corner at a comfortable speed, and therefore the gear that that speed is found at? If the engine is screaming you need to change up, if its lumpy change down. Sorted.
The only other real need for it is to stop you going for 7th gear but thats not really a problem, similarly if you aren't sure you are in first when you came to a halt, try and kick it down, if it does, you weren't, if it doesn't you were.

What gear you are in makes no diffrence, what does is matching rev's to speed etc..... Thumbs Up

Only time it could be a issue is when you have to do a emergancy stop and you are just stood there stamping down on gear lever to try and get to 1st.... Laughing

Course it bloody does!!

Example:
I come up to a right hand turn off from a main road, slow down indicating, see gap in oncoming traffic - can't quite remember if the last gear I selected was 3rd or 4th. Hope it was 3rd so drop down one... except I drop into 3rd instead of 2nd, so I lean into corner and instead of a nice acceleration pulling me round as I'm leaning, I get a low down mutter and hardly any acceleration - meaning I'm leaning too much with a lack of 'pull' to get me round, have to mess about with less leaning, quickly changing gears etc and generally looking a mess!

Now this doesn't happen to me very often thankfully, and most cases when it does dropping to 1st and back up before the turn lets me know what I'm doing. But a gear indicator would help no end... Thumbs Up

I agree with iooi - pointless.

What matters is what part of the rev range you are currently sat in. Near the limiter go up a gear, dropping near the bottom of the rev range go down a gear.

It's hardly rocket science - I don't see how knowing which particular gear you are in makes any difference.
