For some reason these have really caught my attention recently and I've come from the dark side and realised that its not all about 180mph and a racebike for the road. I sat on one a few months ago and it felt just... right. Big wide bars not too much lean and it looks stonking.
Has anyone on here got one or ridden one? Wouldn't mind a few first hand opinions of the bike as it could well be my next choice.

I owned one for a month and a bit till someone did a u-turn in front of me.
The bike is fantastic apart from the engine and whats been done to it. There are 2 sets of butterfly's in the throttle bodies, in first gear only one set barely open which means 1st gear has hardly any power. So I used to set off from 2nd gear all the time. Also I found the gearing too tall for a naked bike, 80mph in first is a bit over the top.
There are a few ways to sort the engine out, but you'll need around £2000 min to get it as it should have been. Have a look on https://www.yamahafz1oa.com/ to see what people have done to theres.
Its a cracking looking bike, but if it wasn't for the engine I would have bought another one.
I have an 03 R1 now and it has the power delivery that this bike should have had. |

Considering the essence of a bike is its engine and the rest of what is there is to maximise and utilise power output and keep the bike from killing you I reckon an engine that needs two grand to make it ok spells out shyte bike ____________________ Bikers make great organ donors, get 115 on your licence today. |

Has to be the black or the 08 white with red for me.
How noticeable is the acceleration in first? You say its not that quick, is that for a 1000?
Oh, and 80mph in 1st ____________________ Kawasaki Z1000 '05

If its anything like FZ6s, your ass will be sorry. The longest I managed to spend on it was about 2 hours, and my ass had gone numb. If it wasn't for the suspension being decent I'd probably be seeing a chiropractor.
Looks pretty unique.
Also about all that engine lark, no power in first but you can still get to 80? Hm. Shame. The FZ6 was pretty shite down in the low revs which meant you had to buzz around the top of the rev range, was quite fun for a while though.
I also concur that it is ridiculous that you have to spend £2000 to get the engine to how it 'should of been'. What does that mean though? What is wrong other than the gear ratios being borked? ____________________ Bikes: 1998 Honda VFR800Fi, 26,500 miles

The FZ6 is the worst bike I have ever ridden, can't remember the suspension being decent though. I was given one as a curtesy bike after the crash and was stuck with it for 2 month before I got paid out.
Yes it will get to 80, but not very quickly. 2nd gear was a little more lively and I got it up to 160 (indicated) felt like a long time to get there.
Yamaha have done a nice job on restricting first gear, for what reason I don't know?
Its the 2nd set of butterfly's in the throttle bodies that are the problem. One set open with the throttle and the other are controlled by the ECU. The ones controlled by the ECU barely open in first gear, these can be removed but then you need to get a power commander and a custom map, also there are a lot of fiddle screws that more likely or not will fall in the engine. I think there is someone called Ivan on the FZ1OA forum who sells something called an FCE, that helps? The exhaust is very restrictive due to emissions laws so its best to get a full system. After you have done that you should have close to 150hp at the rear wheel, I think there were a few people who had them dynoed and were only showing 130hp at the rear wheel some were less.
Also it'll do 100 miles to the tank, 15 miles on the reserve.
I'd say go and test ride one and see how you get on. |

Yeah I hate those headlights. Loads of the new bikes have them style headlights and they drive me insane I like round retro headlights on naked bikes
By the way, I didn't think the FZ6 was 'that' bad. I will say it was extremely easy to ride and it felt very light. It would probably be a good bike to start on if you have just passed your DAS and don't want something blisteringly fast.
I just didn't like the seat really, it certainly wasn't anywhere near the worst bike I had ever ridden. I don't really know if the suspension was that decent, just in comparison to some of the bikes I have owned and ridden. The worst being my CB-1 which has the original rear shock still, which bottoms out on speed bumps. I need to get it serviced at some point. The seat on my CB-1 is soft and squishy though in comparison to the FZ6 which was really hard ____________________ Bikes: 1998 Honda VFR800Fi, 26,500 miles

Yay! Another year old thread resurrection!
Now this is just a guess, but i'm reckoning on new forum member searched for threads about his bike (FZ1), then posted their informative and highly interesting reply without bothering to check the feckin dates.
