For some reason these have really caught my attention recently and I've come from the dark side and realised that its not all about 180mph and a racebike for the road. I sat on one a few months ago and it felt just... right. Big wide bars not too much lean and it looks stonking.

Has anyone on here got one or ridden one? Wouldn't mind a few first hand opinions of the bike as it could well be my next choice. Twisted Evil

Standard can lets the bike down in looks, Nice to work on, Havent ridden one properly (Just from the workshop to the showroom) but wouldnt mind owning one in couple of years time...First 'modern' bike in a while i actually like the look and feel of Thumbs Up

I owned one for a month and a bit till someone did a u-turn in front of me.

The bike is fantastic apart from the engine and whats been done to it. There are 2 sets of butterfly's in the throttle bodies, in first gear only one set barely open which means 1st gear has hardly any power. So I used to set off from 2nd gear all the time. Also I found the gearing too tall for a naked bike, 80mph in first is a bit over the top.

There are a few ways to sort the engine out, but you'll need around £2000 min to get it as it should have been. Have a look on https://www.yamahafz1oa.com/ to see what people have done to theres.

Its a cracking looking bike, but if it wasn't for the engine I would have bought another one.

I have an 03 R1 now and it has the power delivery that this bike should have had.

I like the look of the 1000, the 600 looks a little bit weird to me. Probably looks different in the flesh though.

How noticeable is the acceleration in first? You say its not that quick, is that for a 1000?

If its anything like FZ6s, your ass will be sorry. The longest I managed to spend on it was about 2 hours, and my ass had gone numb. If it wasn't for the suspension being decent I'd probably be seeing a chiropractor.

Looks pretty unique.

Also about all that engine lark, no power in first but you can still get to 80? Hm. Shame. The FZ6 was pretty shite down in the low revs which meant you had to buzz around the top of the rev range, was quite fun for a while though.

I also concur that it is ridiculous that you have to spend £2000 to get the engine to how it 'should of been'. What does that mean though? What is wrong other than the gear ratios being borked?

Have you considered the new z1000 also? It would cost far less to get rid of the bling and tone down the styling if you find it a bit over the top. Check out some of the threads on riderforums. Americans love accessorizing, and some of their mods are tasteful on the odd occasion. I am planning to test ride both the fazer and the zed next weekend if I can arrange it. If you beat me to a test ride, please post your impressions.

While I haven't ridden one, I'm surprised to read the comments here ref. poor acceleration in first - I was quite interested in the bike, and all the reviews I've read have concentrated on the annoying 'stutter' in the injection (which is what the £150 Ivan FCE thing fixes for you) when accelerating from a closed throttle. I believe the 2008 models have had the glitched fixed, at the cost of 8-10 BHP.

I guess if that really was so annoying, they may have fixated on it to the exclusion of other issues

The looks for both the faired and naked versions are spot on - the naked looks especially brutal!

Yellow looks awesome - but the black is moodily tempting too!

Simon Hargreaves - the editor of one of the big bike mags - swears by his FZ1 test bike, so they impress some people.

Cant comment on the performance, but the thou looks sweet as a nut.

I would have to change that headlight though.

Yeah I hate those headlights. Loads of the new bikes have them style headlights and they drive me insane Sad

I like round retro headlights on naked bikes Very Happy

By the way, I didn't think the FZ6 was 'that' bad. I will say it was extremely easy to ride and it felt very light. It would probably be a good bike to start on if you have just passed your DAS and don't want something blisteringly fast.

I just didn't like the seat really, it certainly wasn't anywhere near the worst bike I had ever ridden. I don't really know if the suspension was that decent, just in comparison to some of the bikes I have owned and ridden. The worst being my CB-1 which has the original rear shock still, which bottoms out on speed bumps. I need to get it serviced at some point. The seat on my CB-1 is soft and squishy though in comparison to the FZ6 which was really hard Sad

Nah, I like the headlight. The retro ones make the bikes look too old fashioned for my liking.

Yay! Another year old thread resurrection!

Now this is just a guess, but i'm reckoning on new forum member searched for threads about his bike (FZ1), then posted their informative and highly interesting reply without bothering to check the feckin dates.
