Now as far as I am aware, if I connect a jerry can to the carb, no petrol will flow because of the vacuum it forms, right?

I had a bit of a weird plan to attach a 20l Jerry can to the back of my bike to ride down to Wales due to the abysmal 60mile tank range that the Senda offers.

Now this is the current plan:

https://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w215/impreza_2007/JerryCan.jpg

2 Pipes, 1 for air to go in (running up a pole - a foot high maybe) 1 for petrol to come out. bad idea? The Pole doubles up as a mini flag pole, do Welsh people get annoyed when people fly St George's cross? Very Happy

Any ideas about how to attach the pipes to the jerry can?

That'll work, most people just drill a small hole in the filler cap (which, being on top, doesn't leak too badly).

Read this and be awestruck:
Jerry can fuel tank

Watch out where you attach it to on the bike though, I'd imagine that is a coppers dream to see you riding past with a jerry can bungied on to the back with tubes coming out of it :p

How were you thinking of fixing it to the bike?

That looks pretty damn awesome, can't wait until he has the entire SR finished!

That's the English flag - You have St Patrick's Cross on yours (Ireland).

Err it was going to be attached to the pillion seat (horizontally, like in the picture) with ratchet straps.

Problem with drilling a hole in the filler cap, would be its orientation - the filler cap will be at the back.

[edit]

Change of plan, will be using one of those red metal cans

'Cause my dad think I'm going to blow myself up with a 20 (a 20 would scrap along the floor in a crash). Just need to get one, and spray it Nato Green Very Happy

Oh yeah, I breifly considered doing this on my KLE500. I was going to use a Honda C90 petrol tank which normally sits under the pillion seat of a C90 and has the advantage of being already equipped with both a hose tail and a breather.

Here's what was suggested to me previously
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=1351103#1351103

I ended up getting hold of the Acerbis 27l tank (for my F650) for £120. Get 260miles from a tank now, before reserve. Which isn't too bad. Gonna sell it again when summer kicks in a bit more Wink
Then try sort myself a rig similar to the one in Resident Evil - Extinction..

As said,
dont suction also use gravity?
just needles a breather, you could easily make your own, just drill a hole the size of a previous breather you get your hands on, and then put sum rubber o rings and stick them to the breather once its through the cap, then you have a professional breather lols.

Hi

You will need a breath hole in the petrol can as well. Otherwise the petrol will just sit in the can (air needs to get in to replace the fuel used, not likely to happen at any reasonable speed up the fuel line).

You will also need the fuel can to be at the same height at the petrol tank. The fuellevel between them will equalise, so it one is higher than the other then fuel will just come out of the breather of the lower one (if it is only a small difference then raise the breather on the lower tank).

There are limits on the amount of fuel you can have at home in a jerry can. However not sure whether that would apply, or whether a copper would put you through a lot of hassle to prove whether it applied.

All the best

Keith

Now it's an upright can, I will probably drill a hole in the cap and put a little pipe on, maybe on the body of the can, not sure

Maybe a tap to switch between each tank? There is no way I can keep the fuel level equal.

I think the only thing that could apply would be unsafe cargo.

Thanks

Tap might work, but be a tad inconvenient. The trouble with just connecting them with a T piece is that the fuel level will make very sure it is at equal levels, which will be messy if the breather of one tank is below that level.

Almost certainly various construction and use rules they could get you on.

All the best

Couldn't you just pull over and fill up the bike tank from your jerry can Question

Simplicity ftw, an' that.

I've settled on the tap method, and have a petrol can ready, anyone know of a place to source a 2 way petrol tap?

Thanks

Mark
