 |

Hey,
I'm looking into getting something for after I pass my A2 test (so I'll be on 33bhp for 2 years, I'm 18). I've narrowed it down to either a suzuki sv650s with a fairing kit, or some sports 400.
I've been looking at the Honda 400s, the CBR and VFR series (can't afford RVF) but I have to say the one thing that keeps getting to me is the headlights. They just look so stupid to me, like I'm expecting a mouth to open just below those two stupid looking eyes and say "whats that? tommy's stuck down a well? Brrrrroommm."
I'm not sure if I'm being a bit fussy. The bikes look fantastic from the side, but as soon as you can see the front the look is just ruined I think.
I like the Kawasaki zxr400s headlights a lot more, but I'm not sure on the rest of the bike (mechanically).
I did find this kit https://tyga-performance.com/site/product_info.php?cPath=73_443&products_id=1201
That makes the headlights look great on a Honda sports 400, but it's a little expensive. Anyone know if could just get the lights and cowling part of the fairing? Would that fit on ok? Or do I need the rest of it, all £400 of it.
Am I being weird?

Personaly I think the NC30 is aesthetically perfect. Can't see what is so upsetting about the lights on any of the mentioned 400's? I prefer them to the modern bikes, like the modern GSXR's for example :/
You can't see them when you're riding by the way ____________________ NSR 125F > BROS 400 > NC30 > BROS 400 > Trumpet S4 > '97 VFR 750 |

If you're after something that looks modern then 18 year old 400's aren't really worth looking at Triumph TT600's are reasonably cheap and modern, GSXR SRAD. I assume you haven't got that much cash if you're looking at SV's and sports 4's. ____________________ NSR 125F > BROS 400 > NC30 > BROS 400 > Trumpet S4 > '97 VFR 750 |

£1500 will just about buy a tatty ZX6RJ1 which has the foxeye headlamps which are sorta like the Tyga tat people put on the '30s.
Maybe you can look into that, ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |

that was the main reason i picked my sv over the 400.
Its so dam dated, i could live with a 20 year old engine but it was too ugly to justify the constant breaking down. ____________________ follow my racing season

I had a look at the tt600, looks quite nice. I'll have to do some digging to see what people think about it.

You shouldnt have to dig to far on bcf.
I've got a tt600, and there are a few people on here with speed fours which are basically the same bike.
2 years ago, i test rode 20 bikes to see what i wanted to get after passing my test.
Other bikes may have been better bikes at what they do, but they didnt do what i wanted. I wanted a fun bike that was powerful but was as agile as a smaller bike.
I never tried a sports 400, but i think they are old and over priced.
Some people have pointed out that when it came out, the tt600 was slated for its fueling issues. Its a bit jerky at low revs. So compared to other sports bikes of the time it wasnt the best as it was also down on power, but reviewers agreed it handled great.
It has decent suspension and brakes. Sportsbike standard. Yet you can buy it for the price of a budget bike like a bandit. Other sportsbikes of its era are still £2500 while a tt600 is £1500.
Its not ideal as an allrounder for commuting, a thundercat may be better, but the tt600 has a twitchy responsive feel that makes it great fun without having to go silly fast.
Its flawed, but its also quality.
I tried an sv650 but it didnt feel much of a step up from an rs125. Either power, or suspension or brakes. Its a budget bike like a bandit really just a different direction.
I also tried an r1 but that was too much of a step up.
If you dont mind getting your hands dirty and dont mind having no transport while you learn, or have a friend who can teach you, a sports 400 may be ideal.
Another good thing about tt600's is they tend to be bought by an old bloke who had a triumph in his youth and then gets a tt600 which is a bit to much so he wants to trade it in for a bmw. He will have looked after it, and wont have wheelied it.
Something like an r6 may have a dodgy second gear from clutched wheelies.
if you get the tt600, i can send you files for the workshop manual and owners manual. ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

I was referring to the old=unreliable issue that reguarly comes up. Unless you're buying a nail, for the most part, early 90s Jap bikes are pretty reliable.
On the headlight front, as you've already realised, old bikes generally look old and "unfashionable".
From my experience, I'd rather buy something newer than attempt to make an old bike "look" new with a Peugeot Speedfight esc bodykit.
Unless you like the look of that sort of thing that is. |

I assume you mean Kawasaki?
I don't particularly like the headlights on my CBR 400 either, that's one of the reasons I'm going to purchase a Tyga Kit, if you don't like the original look and can't afford the kit I recommend you go for a bike you do like the look of. ____________________ I Ride: Honda CBR 400RR.

colin1, thanks a lot for that. I always think personal experience is one of the best things when it comes to reviewing a bike. What year is your tt600? It's interesting you picked it out of 20 bikes. What were most of the other ones? Sort of mid range 600s I'd guess? |
Not just 600s.
a dominator, and a freewind, big single road friendly dirt bike
yp250 and burgman, big scooters
gsx600f (a bandit with a fairing) i hated it and it nearly stopped me trying any more IL4 600s
thundercat excellent just not quite what i wanted
vfr750 excellent just not quite what i wanted
r6 the one i tried was a bit fucked but it did corner like it was on rails, too track oriented for a road bike for me tho
98 r1, felt like another breed of bike entirely, amazing, but then the one i tried was in perfect condition yet was the same price as the r6
rebel 250 small cruise
honder vtx big cruiser
harley thing, i thought it might be crap but it exceeded my expectations. It was more crap than I had expected.
and a few others
heres my thread
