How many more oil threads are we going to have this month?
And that article was written 18 years ago - A lot of our bikes weren't even designed or made when they wrote that.
Therefore I conclude that it is about as valid as the pope's views on my riding technique. Not to mention the fact that it came from MCN. Some things don't change.
I use Castrol GP4, not because Castrol say 'we designed this for bikes,' but because a) Honda say they recommend it, and b) because it's the same price as quality car oil. It also offers me piece of mind that I'm not damaging my engine when I rag it to the redline in 1st.

Sorry to drag this "yet another oil" thread on, but I was in Halfords yesterday moochin' around comtemplating my next oil change, as you do. Anyway, what I was wondering was; my bike had Castrol 1 GPS 4T in it when I bought it and the guy I bought it off gave me another 4 litres for the next oil change. Well I've done the oil change and will be looking to buy some more oil in the next month or so. Castrol is API SJ - JASO MA rated, whereas Halfords own bike oil is SL and ACEA rated.
How different are these oils? Is the Halfords "better" or "worse" than the Castrol. Reason I ask is the Castrol is £28/4L and Halfords is £22/5L so it just makes economic sense if there's little difference. ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |

Cheers G, Buster's have the 10w40 for £23.60 + £4.95 P&P so if i do decide on Castrol I'm as well buying it from the local dealers.
Incidentally my mechanic uses Motul 5000 when he does a service and I can get 4L for £18, is that any good? ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |

i worked in the bp and castrol blending and bottling plants in new zealand,
and i can tell you for a fact, that the difference between car and bike oil is next to nothing, 1ml per 1000litres is the difference in 1 additive,
the base is all the same oil (although obvisously synthetic is different from mineral )
you are wasting your time and money buying a comparable bike to car oil.

The Halfords stuff was almost £18 for a 5 litre bottle last time I checked . Bit steep.
So now I use Wickes own brand oil - £10.99 for 5 litres. Just bog standard 10w40 stuff. No problems with the GPZ after 45k miles. I change every 3k. |

Just for information. I used castrol GTX for years but of late I have been using Motoul motorcycle oil from Hein Gericke. Comes in a 5l container at around £20-25. They were doing a free oil and air filter with every tub of oil.
I don't know if this offer is still on but it made it a worthwhile exercise for me. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Castrol GP4 has been about for a VERY long time. Certainly longer than 18 years ago. I have never been able to find a single person who can tell me the difference between Castorl GP and castrol GTX (other than it being more expensive for a smaller bottle, yes go out and check. Castrol GP comes in 4l bottles, car oil comes in 5l bottles, you fell for it.).
Oh, and Honda made their first 400cc V4 engine (from which yours is derived) in 1983. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
