Heya folks.
I used to have a collie/husky called Scamp. I got him when I was in primary three and he died last year at the ripe old age of 15.
Then yesterday I found my cat dead in the ditch when I went to feed her, she was 11. So I'm currently pet-less.
My parents used to own a German Shepard called Rommel, and a mongrel called lady.
Anyway, the thing is I'd quite like to buy a new dog.
I'm not sure wither to rescue a wee abandoned mongrel, or to go for a properly bred pedigree.
I know what I want in the dog, it has to be BIG, intelligent, affectionate, loyal, and hardy enough to spend most of its time outdoors, and some nights in the woods every so often.
So I ask, pedigree dogs, initial expense of a Malamute is about £700, but I'm guessing vets and that will be £££ too, how much a year am I looking?
I also know pedigree dogs usually have shorter lifespans, what sort of age?
With a pedigree tho I could always see about studding him. Or even get a pair somewhere down the line and breed them myself.
Anyone have a pedigree big dog? What are your experiences.

Not had a big pedigree dog but we used to have a Springer Spaniel and had no end of health problems with him. Since then we've only had rescue dogs and the vet's bills have dropped tremendously.
Personally I would say to go for a rescue dog as there are so many of them out there needing good homes, but of course the choice is yours ____________________ 1st bike - Honda Rebel; 2nd bike - CBR125; next bike - husband's 'blade hehehehe

Arr Malamutes
What do you want to know and i will be happy to try and help.
In my eyes they are the most intellegent, loyal, and affectionate dogs there are.
They live around 10 years
If you get 2 be prepared for some serious play fighting, it will look like they are going to kill each other but it is just play and the way they do.
They are the most loyal dogs that you can get, if anyone comes into your house or anything they know instantly, my ex had 2 and lived next to an alley way the lead into a shared garden thing, after a few months of her living there smeone came around and asked if they were her dogs she said yes and they told her that since she had moved in there had been nothing taken from the back gardens.
Intellegence, you train them they do it, they can be used as sled dogs, search and rescue, and any other type of thing you can think of.
Maintainence, food ,water ,long walks, they don't need there claws cutting, and only need there jabs, walk them less in the summer and more in the winter, in the summer i used to do 4 200m sprints at the local field, and give them water inbetween each one, in the summer don't be affraid if they are sick after some exercise, they sometimes do it. In the winter you can just do anything with them and it is the perfect time to train them, for sledding, and muscle gain.
Please pleaase please trust me on this by the biggest cage for them that you can they my look small and you can buy a cheap cage but in 2weeks theyve already out grown it.
Anything else you want to know and i'll help you all i can. All you have to do is PM me.
Cheers

Ok that is the biggest load of fucking bullshit ever, Malamutes would never attack another human unless it was provoked they are breed to protect humans, it is in there instinked, i remember once when i was playing with the ex's the dog turned around a accidently bit my face no scratches or blood just caught it, he then realised what he had done and went and hid under the table and would not come out until i called him, they are not aggressive dogs, if you show them affection and love, they are said to have the intellegence of a 9year old, they know when they have been bad, and if you have 2 the other will punish the bad one, i know i have seen it and the way they do it does not look nice but they have extremely dense hair and can take alot of abuse (from a biting side of things) just shw them love and they will show it back, the ex's dogs even got on with the cat, lizard and hamster.
Cheers

ALL dogs have the potential to bite, not every ones experiences are the same.
Any way, he was asking about PROPER malamutes.
The ones you keep talking about were not the normal malamutes, the are inbred/cross bred to create a taller dog. |

We have its relative, a Siberian Husky, of which many of their traits are similar. First off Malamutes are big...! They are a working breed (like the Husky) so will need lots of exercise. I would expect to have furniture destroyed, but it's not guarenteed. Huskies are the same and ours has never chewed anything in the house (the garden's a different matter, it looks like a bloody battlefield!).
| dragonfly wrote: | They are gorgeous looking dogs and would love to own one but they actually where responsible for the highest attacks on poeple there for a few years. (ate Darrens sisters bird and ripped its head off in front of the kids!) |
Malamutes are not known for being aggresive towards humans at all, let alone being responsible for the "highest attacks on people". Other animals, however, are a different matter. They are a pure breed with a natural hunting instinct. Our Husky is the softest animal you could meet (with people) yet she is highly skilled at catching rodents, birds, rabbits etc. I dare say your sister's bird would have fared the same with her, but it doesn't mean that she'll rip your face off (although she might lick you to death!) |

OK for all thats arguing about the malamute attacking thing, I read this on a webpage for a dogs home. I dont necessarily think its true I mean apparently my dogs are dangerous but then all dogs can be if they are cornered. You never hear poeple actually say what happened to the dog to cause it to bite,do you? no because it was probably frightened. My two dogs are nice and gentle and will lick my cats to death and the cats love them, and these two cats are the fussiest cats ever and have lived with out being near a dog for 8 years and took to them instantly.
In the case of Darrens sisters dog, she has not trained it at all! has the run of the house. My opinion anyway, they will disagree. It did eat the birds head off, mine would have just licked it for a bit also. Just a mad dog, them types are in all breeds.
That was just a bit of info i threw in there that was all. Its horrible when you have nice big dog and people shout at you and cause a fuss to get it away and say that it shouldn't be allowed out! I had a massive row in the street with a woman over my dog being in my front garden when she was over on the other side walking her ankle biters, she told me to take them away. My dog didn't even see her she was that far away. Apparently they should be put down she said and not allowed in peoples homes because they attack poeple
ps I have been trying to run over her mops for a while as they go for me on the bike all the time when she is out.
Edit I have this nice pic in my computer if anyone would like it.Not sure where I came across it. ____________________ All the breast.

Dragonfly, it seems a quiet word with the local plod seems in order here. That other dog owner isnt being very responsible. When we take ours out they are always on leads so they cant run in the road. One of ours thinks that anyone on a bike is me, so she trys to get to them, i think her eyes and ears are a bit worn out ____________________ Simson S51 Enduro, Kawasaki AR80, Yamaha RD125LC, Yamaha XV535, Yamaha XJ600N, Suzuki GS1100G, Kawasaki KLR250, Yamaha BT1100 Bulldog (4/4/08 Deceased).
