Hi folks
The girlfriend and i have started to arrange a little mini europe tour in august, both of us on my SV650.
since this is the first time either of us has done this, we thought we would consult the oracle - ie you guys!
we have this in mind - day 1 - eurotunnel to calais, then up to amsterdam.
day 2, amsterday to brussels,
day 3 brussels to paris,
day 4 paris back to calais. - our ferry is only returning on day 5, so have a day to spare
- so have i planned too much, too far, to little etc etc? also, do you guys have any suggestions on routes etc?
your help would be greatly appreciated! ____________________ 1988 yamaha FZ600 - in great nick, all original - the height of 80's cool! |

Seems ok , except that the weather in northern France and the coastal route is often crap, middle of July I went to France, last year and the weather was awful anywhere North of Paris.
Also day 1 is 300km on the motorway don't over estimate distances you can do. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. True I did 1000km in one day (if you include accidentally going two junctions up the M11 ha) , if you include the cornish misadventure I did near 1500 MILES in one day.
BUT its tiring and he has a pillion,
Sure you can autoroute it all the way and do it in 4-5 hours easy , but its touring and thus such runs defeat the point of touring in the first place!.
Therefore you might go try 300km on backroads which are more interesting but take much more time, ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. | Sounds like a nice fun journey. Doable in a looonnng day. If you have time then...
Day 1
- I would enjoy the coastal road south of Boulogne.
- Then slog from Eaples to Paris. Have a look around the eifel tower (big metal thing), the church thing in the middle of the river, and grab a snack.
- Then keep going south towards the A75.
- Stop somewhere before the Millau viaduc (big bridge) and sleep (tent/Formule1).
Day2
- Wake early and enjoy Millau Viaduc floating above the clouds.
- Continue on A75 and enjoy some of the best motorway in the world.
- As you descend from the last of the Grand Massif (big hills), take a left at Lodeve and enjoy some nice wiggly roads running along side the gorges. Have a swim and jump from a rock or bridge into one of the beautiful lakes.
- Head back to Lodeve and find your way to Lunas (A35). Enjoy the beautiful mountain road, watch out for the tight hairpin (there is no guard rail!)
- At Lunas take the road signed for Joncels. The (bikes only) campsite is about a half mile on the right.
Day3
- Head back to the A75 (Via Lodeve) and follow signs for Espana.
- Stop at one of the beaches along the way.
- Take in a bit of Barcelona, the main bits I liked were Las Ramblas, the gardens near the station, The tower thing in the middle of the roundabout (nr las ramblas), and the old olympic site.
- Head out to Tarragona and you will be at Salou in not to long...
Incidentally, could you let me know if Crocs is still there (in Salou).
Other stops you could make (which are nice)...
- Nemours (just south of Paris) has a nice restaurant by the river, is particularly picturesque, and several cheap hotels (Etap) within half a mile or so.
- D307 running due south out of Le Mans was particularly memorable.
- Saintes was a nice town with a good campsite.
- Biarritz is pleasing on the eye, and you will feel at home with all the Brits on holiday there.
- Cross the Pyrenees anywhere south - southwest of Pau and you can't fail to enjoy yourself. Also take a look from the edge of Pau, its a fantastic place to view the pyrenees from.
Whatever you do, I'm sure you will enjoy it. Good Luck! ____________________ Travelling around the world...a bit at a time. Where am I now? / Visit my BLOG
