Brought this for £600 today, heres the specs and some pics

1989
Black/Yellow
11,000 miles
New Pirelli's
Braided lines (all round)
Aftermarket rear shock (not sure which)
Powder coated frame and rear wheel, all yellow (not front wheel?)
Powder coated rear luggage rack
Stan Stephens Stage 2 tuned (receipts to prove)
Aftermarket screen
Aftermarket calipers (I think, not sure which though)
Datatagged

It also comes with all the original stock parts

Comes with original workshop manual, every MOT slip and all receipts of the various work that has been done on it.

Bike hasn't been run for 7 years, when it did get taken off the road it was emptied of its fuel and the carbs were taken apart and cleaned.

Bad points

Rear side panel has small crack
Rear fender small chip
Only one wheel powder coated? (rear).

Other than that the bike is 100% original and is in very good condition.

P.s. What sort of difference does a stage 2 tune make to performance i.e. throttle response, torque, top end, low end, mid range, bhp etc?

That is too nice for £600. Can we have a video when you get it started up?

I'll be the first to ask. When can I have a go? Mr. Green

only thing is, those anodised aluminium braided lines can break

steel fittings are better, those red and blue bits are bad, and potentially dangerous

i dont know the circumstances in which they do, but kickstart does as he has pics to prove it

nice bike though

They are weaker than steel and stainless steel, Though you can buy the banjo bolts and fittings and swap them over Thumbs Up

Looks like a good buy for £600 Smile

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.

Where can I get these banjo fittings?

Also, apparently it would cost me around £80 to get my wheel respoked. Is that about right?

Could try eBay, Anyone with a Hi-Level account should get you sorted with them.

I think Sickpup off here deals with them, Might be worth a PM Thumbs Up Remember the olives too Smile

Is that including new spokes? If so, Good price i'd say.

First off,

Thanks for taking your time to read and reply to the posts, its sincerely appreciated.

I'm not 100% whether that includes spokes to be honest, I'll have to double check.

Here's a run down of the work this afternoon

The brakes were sticking, so i split the calipers and removed the pistons to give them a clean. I understand that I need to replace the seals, but the only place as so far that I can find selling them is wemoto. They want £7 each for the front and £8 each for the rear, which ends up costing me £44!! (4 for the front, 2 for the rear) Just for some tiny bits of rubber.

Any other options? Places to buy them? Anyone got a spare set (obv new) lying around for sale? I know its essential to replace the dust seal but is it also necessary to replace the piston seal?

Once the brakes are done I'll fit the new battery, fill with it with fuel. Kick it over a few times with the ignition off. Then fire it up!

Anything else I need to be aware of before starting the bike up? (never re-started a bike thats been laid up for so long).

Thanks for your time,
Jack

Maybe make sure that the 2t oil pump works by making a premix in the tank for the start up. Take the 2t oil pipe off the carb and put it in some sort of jar or container (so you don't get oil everywhere), start the engine up and if the oil is flowing it's all good. Run the engine until the premix has run out or drain the premix from the tank. Then fill it up back up with fuel.

Make sure there is oil in the tank when you do this or nothing will flow out Smile

Don't forget to connect the 2t oil pipe back up to the carb when you are done testing.

Also check that there is coolant in the radiator and that the gearbox is topped up with oil.

Wouldn't want you to break the lovely bike.

Cheers MS and Shaane, Ill have to get the camera sorted for when I first start it up and then post it up here.

I've been informed via www.tdr250.co.uk forum members a pre 2004 R1/R6 front caliper will be a straight swap for my OE front caliper. There is no need to replace the master cylinder, its just bolt on and go. It should perform alot better, and the pistons won't corrode as they are made of alloy unlike the OE pistons. It also *hopefully* Laughing should work out as a cheaper option than replacing all of the seals.

So my next question is........has anyone got one of these to sell me? If so, the following requirements must be met:

Front calipers only

Good working order (ready to use)

Also these are perferences but not essential

Gold spot (but would happily buy other colours)
A single R/H caliper (but would also buy a set if unwilling to split a pair)
Good condition brake pads

HEL make coloured stainless brake hose fittings, coloured doesn't always mean anodised crap.

Just brought myself a Gold spot R1/R6 caliper, worked out at £39 as I used the £5 ebay coupon. It came with near new brake pads and is 100% good working order.

Happy days Very Happy

My new caliper

Now I need a new rear caliper, one of the pistons is stuck so hard in the caliper. I've tried pumping the brakes, air compressor and pulling it whilst applying lubricant (not all at the same time though). It hasn't moved!

In order to save me alot of stress, bleeding knuckles and swearing I think I'll just buy another rear caliper. What are my options? Are there any other calipers from modern sports bikes that will just bolt on? Has anyone got an OE rear caliper to sell me?

Also has any one got any/links to brake line banjos for sale, I want to replace the blue andodised ones on there at the moment cos they look shit.

Thanks again,
Jack

P.s. Is there any variance between gold spot and blue spot calipers (apart from their colour of course)

Liked the picture with the kickstart, it actually tells you just what that lump of metal is, first class, the Japs think of everything. It does look quite nice, as you say the spokes are a bit of a mess and need replacing with stainless items.-Jockey. Laughing Laughing Thumbs Up

Thats a beauty eh Manxscot, best of luck in getting your own one.

I couldn't believe that I got it for £600, the guy fully didn't know what it was worth.

I remember when my DT125 blew up, I had to push it home 2-3miles home in full motorcycle gear flippin' sweating buckets. But I got a rebore and oversize pistons, rebuilt the top end and I'm back on the road!

I think the TDR should be just as reliable/liable as the DT, as the DT is kind of a single cylinder version of the TDR engine (half a TDR, lol). It'll just be ring changes every 4000-5000 miles and new piston kits every 10000miles.

I can't wait to ride it next week, power wheelies galore hahahahahahaha Laughing

Hello there,

I need a replacement rear brake caliper for my TDR250, but any of the following will also fit. So if you have any of these that you want to sell then let me know.

However these calipers must be in good working order and ready to use. Ideally they'd also have brake pads in good condition however this is not essential.

THE FITTING IS 83mm (so if have anything with that caliper bolt spacing to sell then let me know).

Rear calipers

TZR250
TDR250
RD350 F2

Front Calipers (which are useable as rear calipers on the TDR).

TZR250
FZR400

This list is inexhaustable

Apparently these fittings were quite common on late 80s and early 90s yamaha's. So if you have anything similiar then also post me the caliper spacer bolts measurement and I'll see if it'll fit.

Thanks for your time,
Jack

My R1 caliper arrived this morning! Happy days, but it has no dust cover. Is this required for a MOT? Could it fail due to a lack of a dust cover?

Thanks again,
Jack

Cheers Matty, will let you know how it rides tomorrow. Sorted the brakes today and got the MOT booked in for tomorrow at 4.30. That R1 caliper is the mutts, so solid. Whats your KR-1 like? I always fancied one of those.

Cheers again,
Jack
