Hi all,

Im going back to finish my cbt this weekend....last time weather was really 2 bad, and i struggled with clutch control and especially the u-turns.

I dont have to pay any extra so thats ok.

I guess its just practice with the clutch, i find it hard to turn whilst controlling with the clutch slowly (u turn i mean).

I really have to force myseld to look to where I want to go, doesnt seem natural. You guys have any tips on these manouvres?

Thanks.

I guess it seems easy to me now, but when I started to ride a gear bike I found clutch control hard (I guess I had experience with bike handling though from my Twist And Go). Just left the engine rev quite high and slip the clutch, do this in a straight line and see how slow you can go without putting your feet down. I'd keep doing that for a bit...

Once you can go really slow, try going in circle (don't have to go as slow) making them a bit more tighter and slower as you get confident. Eventually you will have the u-turn hacked really small roads Smile

Good luck
Thumbs Up

Odd. I would have thought that looking where you are going should be very natural!

A good tip for U turns (and any slow riding) is to slightly drag the back brake to control your speed. Don't touch the front brake or the front of the bike will dip down and it will tip over. Also, if you are turning to the right, grip the tank with your knees and press down on the left foot peg and press in with your left knee so that your body weight is slightly to the opposite side to stop you from leaning the bike into the turn.

Good luck.

Chris.

i know it might sound stupid but remember to RELAX and take a deep breath before setting off. because you are probably thinking 'oh god, i won't make it', you will tense up and your weight distribution and control will go tits up...

Look at it this way.

With your CBT you probably arent on your own bike, so you dont need to worry about hitting the curb, scratching it or dropping it. Plus you dont pass/fail and will keep trying till you get it.

Look where you wanna go and naturally your body will go there, do not look at the curb!

Find a deserted car park and use it as your practice area, use the parking bays as obstacles, i used to do this even when i`d passed my test many years ago. Give it a try, you won`t be bothering anybody this way, good luck. Cool Cool -Jockey.

Another thing that dosnt seem to have been mentioned enough is keep your feet on the footpegs, im always doing uturns and the jazz, and if you put your foot down i never seem to make it in one turn, unlike if i keep legs up.

Also trust your instincts, just like riding a bike, but dont be afraid to put stop/put your legs down if you feel its too much for you.
if needed ask the instructor for some extra help on the manovure,

I had trouble with clutch on cbt, kept dumping it out, through gears apparently everyone there including the instructors nicknamed me the "Epileptic Spider" because id clutch in, smash into next gear, and drop clutch Laughing Oh well i learnt my lesson Smile

YAY!!!!

Did my cbt today!

All went really well, thanks for the advice guys. Managed the turns easy after i just got my 1st one right.

The instructor was really pleased about my riding in general and let me ride on the 500cc he was using, althought the clutch was broken lol - biting right at the end, I managed it ok and it wasnt as hard as I thought it would be.

Now- the question whether to get a 125, OR! just get my full test done, which I could do as im 23.

I felt a lot more confident on the road today, and having the instructor re assure me I could pass the test was a bonus. Just wondered what you guys think?

...and this, but without the cool nickname Laughing

Well done Burnleyfan, hopefully when I've re-booked I'll get it right second time around too! Weather was shite for me today as with your first go, but I was worse hence not passing Embarassed

Try get in touch with the DVLA, i think this only applies to cbt's
but i heard they can't charge you twice, although i was too lazy to look this up and just paid the money up.

and might as well do a big test if the assessor thinks you'll ace it,
might as well get more entitlement, as if your planning on doing it, its better to do it before october when it all changes and gets alot harder i was told!

It is the CBT I have to pay twice for Wink *edit* do you mean the no charging thing applies to CBTs? They're a business with overheads, I would expect them to charge each time.

As for the October thing, that was going to be the plan but that relies on me passing my CBT first Razz

Ye the cbt, i was told as they can only charge if anything for the retest period, because of that 100 pounds not alot of it is used think about it, hence them making a killing.

and if you can afford it do one of those 4 day Das courses,
3 days Das training, 4th day do cbt as well. sorted.

I would do that but just can't afford it at the mo unfortunately *hides the fact I've just bought a laptop and a PS3 and going on holiday soon* so that will have to come later in the summer, but hopefully before the test changes.

Happily did well...! He was also worried about the U-turns but when i saw him do them he was absolutely spot on...

I went to the training school to ride on a 500cc to see if i could comfortably ride it...and that was fine for me too! So will be looking to book my DAS as soon as i pass my theory which is booked for end of April...

My advice for you now would be.... get your gf to do a cbt ... make her buy a 125, rinse that for a while until you do your DAS and then get your big bike Very Happy That's the method that my other half and Dannyw35 (Yun's other half) has used!! lol

Failing that... depending on how confident you are and competent your riding is, do the DAS and go straight onto a big bike... with any bike- it all takes practise and raising your confidence on it whether its a moped, 125cc or a 600cc! If you get a 125cc now, you are bound to grow out of it and you would have wasted your hard earned dosh on insurance and depreciation...

Hey Fourten thanks!

One small problem with your plan though, I don't have a gf lol, oh well.

I really want to go for the bigger bike test so I have booked my theory for 12th april, get that done and out of way.

Glad to hear his CBT went well thats good.
