Err What was that ?? Feel a bit stupid !

Pulled off from a set of lights this morning on the R6 and a 4x4 Merc next to me decided I was going to have it, so to ensure I was safely in front of him and out of his way I gave it a lot of berry’s

The handle bars started shaking quite a bit, I dipped the clutch and it stopped and went up a gear and hard on it again no problems.

After discussing said incident with a mate he thinks I just had the front wheel up a bit, I assumed it was a mini tank slapper of some sort. Feel a bit: oops: as I have never had the front wheel up before!!

Is this going to be a common occurrence and should I be thinking about a steering damper? Or is it just a knee jerk reaction like the first time the back end stepped out on me

Sound like your front wheel may be a touch out of ballance. jack the front end up and test it by spinning, if it always stops at the same point it is in need of balancing.
Edit.... How are your tyre pressures, are your wheels in line?

Pressures are spot on and the bike has only done 680 miles, hope yamaha didnt cock something up on the first service. Ill have to have a look.

Probably the front coming up a bit and the wheel coming down a touch crossed up causing a wobble. If it was a tank slapper you'd know about it.

Forget the steering damper and get the suspension set up properly.

Your front wheel was possibly 'skimming' over the road surface as the front went light. When this happens the imperfections in the road surface cause the bars to oscillate, or slightly twitch. Nothing to worry about and stops as soon as the front wheel takes the bike's weight again.

front just crested, slightly off the ground. it will happen, no biggie
you will notice it more if you go hammering along a non smooth road or hit random bumps while nailing it
damper's are good tho but this wouldnt be cause for one

But I'd advise you to get a damper ASAP, unless you're never going to give it the berries again. You WILL eventually come out of a corner hard, cranked over, and hit an irregularity while on the gas with the front a bit light, and then it'll be too late.

It's around £250 vs life & limb. A no-brainer really.

I'm surprised you have never had headshake out of your thundercat.

I generally feel that a steering damper is unneccesary for most situations - you are dulling feedback from your bike.

Just beacuse this is the first time it happened to you, which made you feel anxious, you are considering something to try and prevent it happening again. My view is that a small amount of headshake is not a problem, and gives you important information about how your bike is coping with situations.

The more you experience it, the more comfortable you will become with it, and indeed expect to get a bit of movement. It's nothing to worry about.

I think the general accepted opinion is that a steering damper will never prevent a proper tankslapper, but just dulls these small shakes. I'd rather have the shake (which I used to get regularly on the SRAD), and know what the bike is up to.

Waste of money in my view.

I get this all the time on the VFR, 10k+ in first and second are no go areas if I want to avoid headshake.

Just sounds like the front got light and left the ground a bit, to be expected when you give 115bhp to your rear wheel from a standing start

Scares the shizzle out of you if you dont expect it but you'll get used to it
