You done the valve clearance to the manual in the right section? (theres 2 one for the brazils and one for the early japanese models in the early manual, such a date to '95.)
EDIT: just read its a 2000 model, get a manual and set your valves to the manual and see how it goes, if its still making the noise set your carb up correctly and see if its still there, wrong mixture might be the cause. Thumbs Up

If you have kept up with oil changes and not let it run low then its probably valves as lonewolf says, they get pretty loud when they loosen off, because there's not much stopping the noise. Most cgs with a few miles on are quite noisy this way because most haven't had them done for a long time or ever.

Even if it were terminal you can swap even majorish engine bits without much trouble in a day. Theres not many simpler 4stroke engines out there.

Failing that it'll get very loud before it finally went ping. which you might as well do if it was major.

I havent done the valve clearance so I took it to a shop near me to get them done and they said it sounds more like the big end bearings but it really does sound like the noise is coming from the top of the engine if you ask me!

I could even do the valve clearance wouldnt know where to start! Id wish to just pay someone to do it :-p

Big end? I'd do the valves first, what kind of garage did you take it to?

Ah right, didn't know that - when I had my C90 that had a little rattle which I quietened down by adjusting the camchain, but obviously it's a different engine.

its a pushrod engine,

i did a top end job on mine in under 2 hours, without taking the engine out.

check the valve clearances, change the oil, check the plug athigh revs.

if these are all ok, then id ignore it.. its a cg its designed to be abused, and trust me it can take it. Thumbs Up

Cheers
John

it only happens in the high mid revs, if your in the high or low revs its fine!

i dont really understand the problem. you mainly hear it when your drop down a gear or slow down!

Is your brake lever touching your exhaust?

it could be, ill have a little ride and find! it does sound like a loud tapping. I havent even looked if it could be that!

Thanks for the advice, it makes a lot of sence if it was something like that because its only really loud when im riding the bike not when its at stand still.

Well just test it by pressing it down when riding, you'll soon find out, obviously not too much.

is it stumbling at any revs? engine running through the rev range without holding back/bogging down?

if its at 3/4 then it could be a needle height problem on the carb causing it to bog down and clatter like hell.

if the performance has dropped them id also check your points, you dont need the flywheel off to do this, just the left hand case, then rotate the flywheel so the F mark is going past the mark on the engine, if the points (seen through the hole in the flywheel) are opening and closing then your ok. mine welded themself together and really messed it up, it would clatter like hell at 3/4 and on full it would take an age to get there.

Cheers

it does have a very slight flat spot in the low revs were it does slow for just a sec, its not a points system its the CDI version!

I havent noticed any drop in speed! it still rides the same just doesnt sound right in the mid high rev range

its not the brake lever too Sad

Who says it'll need replacing Confused

If everyone replaced an engine every time they heard a funny noise then no-one would ever get anything done (and no-one would ride old bikes!)

you even checked the valves lol? Even if it is the big end bearings, which I very much doubt, thats cheaper than a new engine and not terribly difficult. But it's probably the top end, and a rattle is unlikely to mean it's on death's door anyway! Seems totally daft to blow £200 + on a "new" engine, which tbh probably wont be much better and is an unknown quantity, throwing away your (probably) perfectly good engine in the process, when you could just sort out what you've already got.

Just my Penny Coin Penny Coin , t'aint my bike after all. But you do seem to be making a mountain out of a molehill!

Anyway, £270 for an engine? £30 more got me an MOT'd bike!

Get some speed and then close the throttle and pull in th clutch.

Does the noise go away? If not, it's likely your drive chain. Caused a rattl on my cbr125 when it got rather slack + unoiled.

Ah that explains your nerves.

It's a CG - the only one I've ever seen killed was done by the owner running it without any oil in it which did lead the engine eating itself.

Relax. Oh and if you did have to buy a replacement engine for some bizarre reason then you should be looking at £60-£75
