Been having a look around at some machines as I think I’ve had my time with the ZX7R now. I'm on my second one now, although I wish I could keep it as well as another bike I’m inline for a change into the summer.

Options were limited on certain factors.

I did want a big twin, but the SP1, Duke's and the Mille were all killers for insurance. I can afford one but running costs would be too much.
The twins I was interested in was the TLR/S, Firestorm, TRX, etc, the not so exotic models.
After much consideration and research it would seem that I wouldn't be able to ride any of these as quick as my Ninja on the roads, or that it would be hard work.
It was mostly down to sound and looks with the TLR.

Anyways, a biker at my place suggested the ZX9R.
From what he's said about his, which was pretty trick, is that it is a very good all round machine. It would kill off most bikes in its class and above it, he says it is just FAST.
I’m a picky bas**rd so this has been a tough one, I don’t want a Gixxer, but this is only due to the fact the models I am keen on are out of my price range.
I don’t really want to go Honda again, it just isn’t me. I have been looking at the late 90’s blades, which I’ve been told are very good bikes.
Also considering looks, there isn’t much that catches my eye that within my price range (£2-2600), I adore the looks of my 7R and not so keen on the looks of the 9R. Finally, I don’t like R1’s.

So what are the alternatives?
I could stretch maybe a little more over £2600 but wouldn’t been keen on doing that. In short I’d like a litre bike, nice powerful engine, not too buzzy, with looks to match the iconic ZX7R.

K Thumbs Up

ZX9s are fast but lardy around teh corners.

Firestorms are serious fun and will still cut the mustard against more modern bikes.

I've still got my ZXR750, but recently brought a 916 and just last week got it sorted (was a track bike) and through its mot.

All I can say is, I LOVE the 916. I've never ridden a big v-twin before and its awesome. Spent a few hours out on it Saturday morning giving it it's first proper run out and it goes really well. Power delivery is awesome and very different to the ZXR's. Handling is also superb, I was surprised how easy it took the corners, both fast and slow.

I thought insurance might be a problem too, but done a quote through Carol Nash (also have the Kwak insured with them) and it came back at £140 tpft. Now I am 33 which might have something to do with it, but have just 2 years ncb.

Thumbs Up

Will the 916 cope ok through all manner of conditions?

Would i have to get one past a certain year to avoid the Italian quirks?

Thing is with a Duke i'd have to really justify the extra cost in purchasing one.

No idea mate. Mine is just a toy / track bike so will only get used every now and again, gone are my days of long commutes on the bike to work every day.

Stanard on both; worse than the ZX9 for being 'lardy around corners' I'd say.

My zx9 I reckon is easily better than a GSXR750Y for cornering and weight - but you'd hope so as it's gone on a pretty extreme diet and has ohlins internals and shock.

If looks are important, then maybe go with whatever you like and get suspension upgraded as appropriate.
I think they're really ugly and not a fan of twins, but the Aprilia RSV (R if poss) might be worth a look.

My friends ZX9R had been tuned, and suspension. Was around 150bhp or something. But he said as a factory bike it aint bad, its bloody fast. lol

The RSVR is out of the question due to the insurance.

Anyone else got any recommendations for this price range and spec?

To be honest Killa, I think you're limiting yourself by price or by spec here. What you ask is pretty difficult.

Another suggestion might be to do an engine swap on the '7 for a 9 lump...

An SV1000 with sorted suspension would meet your requirements, but I think it might be a bit beyond your price range.

Personally, if I had to have a toy V twin for £2500, I'd probably go for a Ducati 900SS or 1000DS (If I could get one for the price) but I doubt I'd trust it in daily usage...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Well i don't have a choice on the proce range really.
I want full sports but with reliability to match. The 7R really has been perfect.
I don't like the idea of dropping a 9R lump in it, i would be constantly adjusting other things when i need to be riding it all the time. That would be nice though.
