PostPosted: 20:09 - 16 Apr 2008    Post subject: The Most expensive First service in history ? Reply with quote

Stuck my 08 Aprilia RSVR in for its first service yesterday, with lets say a few hiccups.

Inmoto Croydon

First of all i phoned up and promised a loan bike, so i dropped the rsvr off and they realised im 20 then said we cant give you a bike, not even a 50cc.
So i ended up getting the bus, which is fair enough, but they could of at least told me what bus to get or tell me where to go, picked the bike up today and me expected £80 MAX having owned Jap bikes thats what you expect for a first service, even Ducati arnt that expensive for a first service.

But i was handed a bill for £236, which ended up in a huge argument about what the hell costs that on a first service and why they need 3 hours labour at £50 to do what is basically a glorified oil change.
Apparently they check the valves on a first service, i rang another dealer and asked and said yes, but they should of asked you wether or not you wanted them to be checked as its a £150+ job.
I think the dealer saw i was young and is taking me for a ride, he even tried to state during the argument i dont even have a license to ride the RSVR (ive been riding since 17 and had a full license since 19).

Im really unsure where to go on this, im going to try and reclaim 1.5 hours of labour (£75), on the grounds i should have been asked if i wanted valves checked at 600 miles !!!!.

Where does Ali work?

I know she is in one of the bike shops just there. Might be worth a PM.

Wave it looks like you have a potential case under the common law of past consideration.

from wiki

For example, if X promises to reward Y for an act that Y had already performed, the performance of that act, while good consideration for the promise to be rewarded for it, is past consideration and therefore not good consideration.

That sounds quite harsh although if I ever get any work done to my bike I always ensure I know what they are doing and get an idea of how much it will cost.

That way Idont get a shock and they cant run up a huge bill for silly things.

Hope you manage to get your money back though Thumbs Up

I only said potential,

in that if the manual states it needs its valves checked, other dealers agree that it needs its valves checked, and the valves checked is a service that is performed at the first service , then asking for a first service means having the valves checked.

But if you asked for an oil change specifically and they did the valves too , they did something past consideration and thus you don't have to pay for the valves bit.

Im trying to be realistic, even if its Aprilia policy (yet to be confirmed) to charge for labour on first service, which tbh ive never heard ofm then 1.5 hours is what i have been quoted by another Aprilia dealer.

So i think a (£75) is fair to both parties.

Something that is really ironic is i asked them to adjust the throttle as its silly loose, but they didnt touch it, instead they do work i didnt ask them to do.

Nope, that fits in entirely with what I would expect from a dealer, especially a franchised dealer, especially an Aprillia dealer.

I'm surprised they didn't just kick you in the balls then rub dogshit in your face while you were down for daring to ask them to service your bike in the first place. Especially considering the vast majority of dealers do the first service for free.

You've bought the bike, now fuck off, why should someone as high and mighty as a motorcycle dealer waste their time with someone who just spent several thousand pounds on a new motorcycle from them. Get real, you're not going to be buying another one for a while so why should they bother with you?

Wait 'till you need parts and god help you if you need anything repaired under warranty.

A men to that, i think they saw me as young then tried to take me for a ride, he spoke to me like it was my first bike, he tried to say the loose throttle was normal on sportbikes, i corrected him on the 11 bikes ive owned and the countless 30+ Bikes ive ridden (mainly BCFers) that a loose throttle like that is infact not normal.

I always thought all first sevices were free on new machines, all you paid for was fluids. The first service, usually done at 500 miles, was their opertunity to put right any little defects or adjustments needed to make it fit for perpose.

Aaaah, but the pertinent info here is, Wave bought the bike second hand and it probably wasn't originally purchased from the dealer in question.

Still, its under warranty 'an all.

I'm not sure you have much of a leg to stand on Wave, because if they didn't check the valves they could claim it has invalidated the warranty...

seconded...
my only ever experience with mechanics has ended up in the above link.

i closely watch all MOT's, and with my lifan, all warranty services.
the time i think 'my bike is in safe hands, lets sit in the waiting room' is the time it gets ballsed up. at MY expense.

Pretty sure it would still be free, the dealer claims the money back from the manufacture.

Strange that its 2nd hand yet done so few mile for such a bike.

Name and shame OP Thumbs Up

Valve clearances at 600 miles? Shocked

That is a fine example of urine removal. Thumbs Down Get a copy of the dealers workshop manual (must be one on-line) and check it for yourself.

I remember my Bandit was technically second hand with 50 miles on the clock when I got it, yet I still got the first 600 mile service absolutely free.

I would be flabbergasted if I was told it was nigh on £300 for a first service!

i think this is the right manual

https://www.serviceaprilia.com/public/lumAprilia/RSV%20Mille%202007/854021%20RSV%201000%20R-Factory%20UK-NL%202007.pdf

page 169 onwards, i cant see a mention of valve clearances.

googling it has showed up that others are in the same boat.

Best thing you can do in your biking life is find a well established local guy you can take the tricky stuff to.

There's an ex Honda guy I use in L'pool and he's really good.

From that manual the 600 mile service comprises of:

Every 625 miles

Drive chain - check
Transmission cables and throttles - check
Steering bearings and steering clearance - check
Disc brakes - check
Engine oil filter - replace
Engine oil reservoir filter - clean
General vehicle operation - check
Braking systems - check
Light circuits - check
Safety switches - check
Clutch lever fluid - check level
Brake fluid - check
Coolant - check level
Engine oil - change
Tyres - check
Tyre pressure - check
Wheels - check
Bolts, nuts and screws - check tightness
Cylinder synchronisation - check
Suspension and settings - check
Brake pad wear - check

Now further on it says,

Every 12500 miles
....
Valve clearance adjustment - adjust
...

So looks to me like they may be fibbing... Neutral

Hmm, tricky , done some research and some you do, some you don't.

It seems they dropped the 600 mile valve check a few years ago for the RSV, on the earlier bikes however, say pre 05, I'm guessing you had to.

The ones on my 02 were checked at 600 miles.

On age discrimination, I was told by Bike Pavillion in Letchworth I wouldn't get an RSV for under 5k, so I took my 3k elsewhere and bought my mint 02 bike. Wankers.
