HI everyone. I was recently planning to go to france in june but after replacing my rear tyre and realsing my front will need doing soon (or now but i dont have the money) and new rear brake pads and maybe some other things but also my passport needs to be updated (£80) so i can't afford to go. so is there anywhere we can ride to which dont need a passport/ we are considering isle of white, isle of man or ireland - but can you get to any on a ferry with the bike and not need a passport - i have been told all 3 should be ok, but no one seems 100% sure.

thanks
Calum.

You don't need a passport for any of those (although you may need some form of photo ID).

No point going to the Isle of White, you'll have ridden all the way around it in about an hour........... Laughing

IOM is nice but expensive to get to and quite expensive when you're there too.

Ireland would be a good bet. Plenty of ferries and some interesting places to visit once you get there I'm told. Never ridden over there myself though so can't vouch for it.

However, for a good ride on brilliant roads I would personally recommend the west coast of Scotland. No passport required, no money to change, easy to get to (if a bit boring) from most of the UK, you can get the ferries over to some of the little islands if you want (or go over the bridge to Skye), your breakdown cover will still apply etc etc etc.

Like babyyam says, don't bother with Isle of Wight. I've been there and while its nice and pretty, it's hardly breath taking scenery.

Isle of Man is different. Has big hills and great roads (especially the mountain road Cool )

Scotland once you get past the Glasgow / Edinburgh 'border' becomes amazing. Only been up there a couple times on holiday, but it's the best scenery in the UK and up with being the best in Europe along with the Alps.

Lake District / Dales for a few days good riding too Thumbs Up

thanks for all of the replies. i will guess we'll probably do scotland then, a nice LONG ride from the very south of wales to wherever we start in scotland - with A-roads only - motorways are too boring and wear the tyres down too much and time isnt an issue on a bike weekend away as it's all about the ride and the scenery.

hopefully towards the end of summer i can happly say i've been to scotland (last time i went i was not even born, infact - i was 'found out about' when my parents were in scotland) so would be a new place to go, never ridden north of gloucster nor wales north of treorchy so the whole trip would be an experience.
thanks again.

I have stayed in Scotland for 46 years and last year i decided to go round it on the motorbike.

Seen places i have never seen before and some i may never see again.

What a fantastic week though, loved every bit of it.

Ireland is good to, i go there every year in the car for holidays cos we have family over there. No passport, only photo ID

The trip up can be filled with scenery if you want

(map)

That map is a fine example. Up from the south of Wales into Snowdonia, then cut across into the Peak District, then head north following the spine of the Pennines, up over the moors between Manchester / Leeds and continue up into the Yorkshire Dales. From there cut across into the Lake District and then head north into Scotland.

Everything I have mentioned there is great scenery and all interlinks with each other!

Shocked Shocked Well you're in for a treat. You actually get to ride through hills / lakes etc and hit the twisties if you head north.

thanks shay, i'll keep that map saved and deffinatley look into it a lot more when i know when things are happening if it all goes ahead.
deffinatley like to ride through the likes and all that, i've only really done one mountain, which is Treorchy and so i want to get out and about a lot more. it's just trying to find the money for it and the right day where i can ride with someone instead of on my own, i find a long ride is much better when you know when you stop for tea there is someone to talk to and enjoy it all with.

thanks a lot, think i'll do a scotland tour if anything now, even means i can take my sat nav with me to find nearest petrol stations etc.

thanks a lot for all of the replies - all been really helpful Smile

There is just a taste of what you can expect to see. Those photos don't even begin to explain what it's like when you ride through it and actually visit the places though!

You really have to do that journey!

wow, thanks Shay ! deffinatley looks like an amazing ride and an experiance i certainly wont forget. just going to have to save up now to go, cos it's cost me around £70 to get there, plus the same to get home and whatever we spend on food, accoamadtion (will probably camp to keep things cheap) and petrol when we're there. £400 should cover evreything comfortably and so i'll have to save all of my wages for a whole month and hope someone else can come with me.

thanks a lot.
Calum.

Ireland is great (I used to live there and the wifes irish), there is some fantastic scenery and there's hardly anybody who lives there, its sooooo empty.

Only problem is the roads aren't that great, you really appreciate the english roads after riding in Ireland.

But what an experience.

Another vote for doing Scotland
Do the west coast if you can. Include Skye if possible. Certainly get as north as you can get. Do the Applecross road. All good stuff.

Can camp just of the road if needed although there are camp sites and B&B if you want some luxury.

Thumbs Up

Not sure... I'd thoroughly recommend the Scottish Highlands & Islands, lovely scenery, and amazing roads - just mind the weather, eh

Tish.

Mk1 'FTW' in the style stakes, but Mk3 for drivey goodness. I still can't decide if it looks brilliant or fugly though. But I shun your 2nd generation nonsense - odd numbers only for me. Razz

NC (3rd gen) just looks like crap, IMHO ... First gen is nice, but like a go-kart... 2nd gen (NB) is all the great things about the first MX5, but with decent driving Razz
