Ok, I've been doing some research, and well, not having huge successes in finding out what I want to know Razz

Is it feasible to buy a 2nd hand bike, over 500cc for around the £600 mark - something that isn't going to go tits up after 50 miles? Smile

I don't want style, or pristine. I want something that will just get me from A to B faster than my 125!

Oh, no sports - something like my CG, just bigger would be ideal (I'm slightly disabled, and I cannot feel stable on anything you lean forwards).

Or am I living the impossible dream? lol

You might be able to get a battered CB500, ER5 or other ex-commuter bike for that.

you might be worth looking for a Honda Bros - 400 / 650, Honda NTV 600 / 650 some may be high milage, but bullet proof.

If you can haggle really well or add on another 200 quid to your price you should be able to get a mechanically sound GS500 or maybe even a tatty Bandit.

Just ask yourself if it will be a false economy in the long run, Will you end up spending more on repairs than if you had just saved an extra 300 or so quid and got a solid example of whatever you do get?

Yup, I have certainly considered that.

Problem is, I am not particularly lucky with funds. My CG125 is a late 06 plate, bought for 1400 from a dealer, which is slightly high priced - but it was only 191 miles on the clock, and it did look totally pristine showroom condition - but I am well aware that I will probably not make even half of that (even with possibly under 1500 on the clock too). I might be able to add another hundred - 150 at most Neutral

So yeah, I might have to just put up with what I got. Although the lack of power is killing me now lol!

Hey.

You should be able to get more than £600 for your CG surely? I paid £750 for a 6 year old CLR with 8k on the clock. (That was 2 years ago, I still have it...)

It now has over 20k under its, erm, wheels and I'd expect to get around £600 for it. 125's keep their value pretty well.

Not an expert here but I'd have thought you'd get atleast £800 for it. There's a private 06 CG on autotrader with 1.6k miles in at £1400, 04 models are all around 1K with a higher mileage than your one.

Thumbs Up

Might be factoring in insurance?

Your going to struggle at 600, if you could push it a bit (borrow beg and steal) then as already said you'll get something thats likely to be alot more reliable.

Never know though, enough searching you might strike it lucky.

What you need is a klr650 Thumbs Up

You sit totally upright, does 65+mpg and is a solid reliable bike. But it's not the fastest of machines though, only about 45bhp,and they are noisy.

You could buy mine it's within your budget Thumbs Up

Yer i sold my YBR 125 for £1100 06 plate with 8k on the clocks, should have no problem selling it for more then £600 unless something seriously wrong with it?

Personally i wouldn't accept less then £900 for it if it is a late 06 with low mileage.

Thanks for the replies guys.

THe price for the CG could be higher I guess. And I am hoping to part with it within the summer months, so maybe I could get a good price for it. (and, other than needing a clean, it's still utterly pristine Very Happy )

It's reassuring to see there are still bikes out there that won't bankrupt me, obviously I would love to just go out and buy a Goldwing or something else with built in microwave and kettle (!), but I will have to start off old and work on up.

Still, gotta pass the test first.. Neutral On a side note, how long would be reasonable to attempt a DAS? I know you can do it immediately, but seeing as it took me a couple of weeks to figure out the clutch - is it worth me using the 125 for a few more months, or just attempt it asap?

I had a bit of experience on my 125 and then did my DAS, but I know people that have jumped straight into their DAS and been fine.

I think it's just a case of doing what you think is right for you? Want a bit more confidence first, then carry on riding around on your 125, but if you are itching to go faster, then do your DAS.

Whatever you decide though, do it before the new test comes in in October!

Shop around. my dad got an absolutely mint FZR750 from a bloke who fixes rollers and bentleys, just didn't have the time to ride all his bikes.

Something will come along.
