Be honest now, on a trackday whereabouts are you in the groups? ____________________ Space Monkey #7

Haven't done a trackday yet, but will do one in June. In the CSS, I was fast in corners and slower on straights, so I reckon I'd be in the middle of the slow group, providing I wasn't held up in the corners by those slow in them. ____________________ My other bike's a Monster... |

Only done one track day and it was amazingly good fun. I was one of the faster riders in the slow group but definitely not the fastest.
I'd love to do a few more and get a bit more serious, but I'm conscious that if I was to do so I should get an old bike or a dedicated track bike to thrash or potentially drop. ____________________ Current Bikes - Kawasaki ZX-6R (636) | BMW G650GS |

Middle of fast group, though probably a bit rusty now. It of course depends on the riders on the day of course; have been right near the top of the fast group and have a few weeks later then been in the middle of the inters group (to be fair it was Snetterton on a 64hp SV650 and the fastest rider that day was the current British Superstock champion on his race bike, along with a load of his friends ).
Skudd; I'd say that as far as faster road riding goes, a trackday probably does offer more than off roading (having done both). Ie, wWhile it does help to be comfortable with a bike sliding - it's much easier and a lot more controllable off-road, as you might expect etc.
However, I'd still heartily reccomend off-roading; great fun. If you haven't done it before, though, I'd try and find someone to blag a bike off and have a play around on a field etc before doing an organised trip to wales or something.
Stiffler:
Maybe you should get a dedicated road bike to drop, instead - be careful and don't go all out too quickly and you should be fine.
I've twice crashed on trackdays - both times I lost the front on tyres that were too cold in damp/wet conditions/
Crashed many, many mores times racing and in race practices; but then trying that bit harder in those . |

I tend to be middle of the inters usually.
When I was at Cadwell a couple of weeks ago, as I'd never ridden there before I was asked to start off in the notice group (even though I'd booked into Inters). I was quite comfortably one of the quickest out there.
I'd like to get up to fast group, but I've never kept a track bike long enough to get used to it and be consistant on it. Now I have the 916 I think I'll keep that for a while as its a very nice bike for the track, loads of torque, great handling etc...
I'm going to Brands GP track this Thursday and cant wait, just a shame I dont think I'll have the slipper clutch working by then.

What requirements are there to do a track day? As in age, do you have to have your licence for x years, do you have to have to have a certain level of skill etc.

I'm spectacularly inconsistent. Sometimes I'm happily middle of inters, sometimes I suck. And get pissed off about it cos I know I can do so much better, which often makes me suck more.
I think it's down to not doing that many trackdays and not doing that much road riding. And the trackdays I have done have been on various bikes and spaced too far apart to get any consistency up. If I put my mind to it, I reckon I'd get back into the zone but at the mo I've got rather too much on.
(And of course, it does depend on the day. Sometimes there's a high noob content that makes you look good, other times there's a load of racers using it as sneaky practice and you look shite. ) |

Never done a trackday but if I did, i'd be the biker equivalent of the old man in the Rover 420 towing a caravan
We all gotta start somewhere and I read somewhere about trackday schools for novices. Sounds interesting. |

I'm usually at the quicker end of inters althogh the bike does let me down a little on the straights when people just sail by on there 1000's only to hold me up at the next corner.
On a bigger bike I'd like to think I'd be in the middle of the fast group somewhere but riding the 250 knackers me out enough as it is. ____________________ If you dont like the way that I ride.......Stop trying to keep up!!! |

"Captain of team numpty"
First trackday last year, hopefully I'll be able to get one sorted out this year as well before the season is up.

Approx one hour in the novice group on one afternoon, next visit (a pace-day) was one session in the intermediate, bumped up to advanced (last one on the page IIRC) and got another two or three sessions in before coming off. Approx two hours total track time with a 56-sec lap on Brands Indy circuit. Not too shabby for a 15-stone grunter on an old RRW. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Only done one trackday and was about 3rd fastest in the inters, which i was really impressed with really, considering i had leaking front fork seals! There were only like 4 people i couldn't go around the outside of around gerrards and my friend who races taught me how to outbrake people which was good.
