Mister James is Mister no more - and is currently strolling down Civvie Street!

Although I'm technically employed until Sunday, I'm on rest days and annual leave, so I've handed in my warrant card, cuffs, ID, tallies, uniform, baton, riot gear (Sad) and all the other paraphernalia of the last 4.5 years of oppressive immigration detention!

I start with the UKBA on Monday as a Border Control I/O - although I've (finally) got my Police Day 1 assessment board tomorrow as well - kinda a busy week for me!

I'm not quite sure that leaving the place I've put so much blood/tears/effort into has sunk in yet, but I'm feeling pretty light-headed and giddy.

Nothing to do with having been up for 24 hours, I'm sure!

Doubt this will interest most people - but any Nigerian lurkers can now inform their detained brethren that the coast is clear!

Joining the IS, or UKBA as we now calling it.
I escaped there 18 months ago now. Best choice I ever made, it is a horrible place to work.

I assume you're training down at Gatwick, just above my old office, then being stationed at Heathrow, probably in 3 or 5.

Ah well, at least after a couple of years of hating being an IO, you can transfer into the real civil service. We don't work shifts here, and people get promoted.

I assume you are now Miss James?

I like shifts - I'll be working 8hrs less a week for a pay cut of only about £100 a month in real terms - plus getting a shed-load more annual leave, etc.

I'll be perfectly honest, the second the Plod offer me a place, I'm there. UKBA will keep my interest for a bit - as I'm bored and stagnating where I am now, nothing like a bit of a change to keep you awake!

Training at Status Park for 5 weeks, then 4 weeks mentoring at T3. Thank fook I've avoided T5, several of my ex-staff now work there (including in the baggage department) and it sounds like a total 'mare!

Yeah well when you are self employed its hard to keep a job as technically you dont have a job, you wouldn't get it robby.

When the work dries up its different to not keeping a job.

As well as working, I have actually been trying to change direction and build a career for myself, its starting to look like it could get rosey for me in the near future.

But being as I havn't mentioned it, you wouldn't get it robby.

I wonder if you will miss the authorised and completely legal use of violence.

Im sure there is a more PC way of describing justifiable use of force or whatever, but you know what I mean.

I'll admit that UoF incidents are often a buzz, and it's satisfying to conclude them without serious injury to staff or detainees - and to attain your objectives. I'll even admit to the occasional incident that I enjoyed due to the richly deserved nature of the gent's fall from grace.

Despite the above caveats, I never went out of my way to initiate or provoke the use of force without due cause - I just don't have the time or the inclination, and the paperwork is unbelievable!

In short, I'll miss aspects of the job, including the odd tear-up, but I doubt I'll lost much sleep over it.

People don't believe most of my stories unless they've had some experience of custody themselves (from either side of the fence).

I've seen some pretty horrific things, and had some awesome laughs too - swings and roundabouts, I guess.

Don't know about foreign nicks, but aint there some proper funny goings on in the nick.

I will never forget a lad "big gaz" so called because he was big and his name was Gary obviously, blowing up the electric to a cell trying to make a kettle from a cup of water, two screws and the lead to a stereo. He didn't screw the screws into the lead enough, and when he eventually did get it right it was still plugged in and then something went bang and gaz went flying.

He was known as sparky from then on.
