Hi all

Need to change my clutch at the weekend and need a torque wrench. Bought one on ebay but just found out it hasn't been posted yet !!! Argghh

Anyone in the Reading area know where i can hire one or have one i can borrow for a couple of hours ?

Tried HSS but they don't have them, local garages told me to sod off and i can't think of anywhere else.

Thanks

Jon

I've changed quite a few motorcycle clutches and I've never used a torque wrench to do it.

If you can both hold a clutch basket still and put enough pressure on the bolts to shear them, you're a better man than I.

Its the clutch plate spring bolts that need to be tightened to 9 lb/ft
Is it ok just to tighten them using your judgement ?
I don't want to shear the bolt off.
Cheers

edit: just reread your post so plz ignore

I bought one from Machine Mart the other day for approx £16 quid. Not really worth hiring one is it?

Halfords will have them.
Screwfix will have them.
Maplins will have them.
Drews will have them.

But as said, you don't need one for changing the clutch. Smile

I am in Reading and also have them - but my one that goes that low is a bit knackered if I remember, so you'd probably be as well doing it up by hand Smile.

You're welcome to borrow it if you want, though.

Incidentally, Argos sell an 'ok' one too the last time I checked.

Thanks everyone for your support with this.

Sods law that the one i bought won't arrive in time but guess thats life.....

If i don't use a torque wrench how tight do you need to do them ?

I've read thats its about a quarter of a turn past finger tight but not sure about that.

G - Providing the plates turn up then i'll take you up on your offer if it starts looking dodgy as your the closest to me.

Haven't done a bike clutch since my first 125 many many years ago so can't really remember it so i'll see how it goes.

Thanks again i really appreciate all your support

Many torque wrences won't go that low.

The tightening torque on the clutch spring bolts have no bearing whatsoever on the clamping-pressure of the springs, if that's what you're worried about - the spring tension is set by the installed height, which is determined by the amount of clutch wear. They are just normal bolts in every way. You should tighten them just like any other ordinary bolt, with a dab of Loctite Blue on the threads.

P.S. If you tighten the bolts by hand with a ratchet, chances are they will be higher than 9 foot-pounds - you'll be surprised how little is it.

As Geri says - you're tightening to metal-on-metal, not tightening against the spring.
I'll try and dig mine out (and check it does go that low; though pretty sure it /just/ did for my 3/8" one - the 1/2" one starts at 29Nm).

Ok so common sense then. Just enough till it feels right.

Thanks all i'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers

I'd say go out to a real store and buy a nice one. The odds have it if you needed one this time you'll need it again in the future.

You'll be taking them off first so put them back on something similar.

9ft/lb is not at all tight, probably about as tight as you can get them using one finger on a 3/8" drive ratchet handle. At a guess, something like screwed all the way in then add another 1/4 turn.

That, good sir, is EXACTLY what we do for oil filters; which makes it a good reference for how tight that would be.

Reasonably good but not exact because air filters have a fine pitch thread, the torque on clutch bolts (corse pitch) will be higher for the same amount of turning.
