Need a bit of advice on waiting table...

hi all,

basically i have blagged my way into waiting tables tomorrow and i've never done it before.

I have just found out its a 4 star hotel.

Any tips or advice greatly appreciated.

And make sure your fag ash doesn't spill on their shoulders, cos it looks like dandruff.

Seriously, though.
Do you know how to do "silver service"?

(the thing where you have a spoon and a fork in one hand, and you have to dish out the food onto their plates).

If not, its a good idea to practice that.

LISTEN to the guest when he / she wishes to make a complaint, and try to reassure them that you are going to help them and not just fob them off.

and most of all and probabaly the most important thing to remember is be yourself and have fun.

Listen to the managering staff not only in the FOH, but also in the kitchen. The head chef is equally as important to you as the FOH head/service manager, as without him, the food wouldn't be there.

Don't try to balance food like you will see people doing if you haven't got the experience and it's your first shift.

Double check table numbers leaving the kitchen to go to the tables.

IF YOU AREN'T SURE ABOUT SOMETHING ASK, NEVER ASSUME. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, THEY WON'T MIND YOU ASKING ON YOUR FIRST DAY BUT THEY WILL MIND YOU COCKING UP BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T THINK TO ASK.

Remember to smile, but not too big a smile, a smile like you would when you see something that reminds you of a time of old, and keep your fecking mouth shut when you aren't talking.
