it could be a shagged battery.

at idle, theres probably enough power from the alternator to power the sparks. if the battery is failing, applying the brakes will draw more power to light up the brake light.

does it do it if you flick the lights on?

Was about to say that I'd be looking for a short in the live supply to the brake light, but if it's not blowing fuses then I wouldn't be sure.

If you have a wiring diagram, does the brake light have an earth in common with either the CDI or coils? If so, check and clean that connection - if it's bad, it could be trying to use either of the two as an earth, which would essentially cut the ignition.

The best way to tell which side of the bulb the problem is on would be to remove the bulb and see if the problem persists. If it does, it's on the live side. If not, it's the earth side.

Hi

From what you say it is the sudden stop that it killing the engine, rather than the electrical load issue.

Only things I can think of are a wire shorting out under those circumstances (eg, wire to the side stand switch, or the stand moving the switch) or more likely the carbs flooding into the engine (possibly a sticking or dirty carb needle valve).

All the best

Keith

i did check the side stand but maybe its worth another check & i did think it might be a fuel prob so if iget time this wkend i might strip the carbs down because mpg's not brill either

Check the side stand again - you might find it's swinging down slightly when you come to a sudden stop and doing that means the sidestand switch becomes activated and that kills the engine.

abs wasnt an option on early bandits & just thought it cant be the side stand cut out because it happens even when bike is in neutral !

...I'm at least 80% certain suzukis of that age have only the kill, clutch and sidestand swiches in the engine cutout circuit. i.e. neutral makes no difference.
