Crash helmet too tight.

I am thinking of buying another crash helmet,probably a Shoei or Arai, they do fit ok but just thought would it be good if the helmet makers started making helmets made to measure for every head shape.

You can buy made to measure everything else nowadays, with the technology available a helmet with a shell made to your head shape would be a big safety improvement.

The superstars like Rossi get them, I think they should be available to the general public.

Did you try on other makes rather than shoe or arai? they all have differnt sizing mate there not all the same.

Your best bet is to try on alot of lids, also if its too tight to withstand 5 mins of wearing then its not right for you.

You DO realise the amount of resources required to create a lid that's moulded perfectly to your head?! A head imprint won't be sufficient since the expanded polystyrene structure is meant to deform over time to mould into the shape of your head anyway. Made to measure lids is a big ask. Think about getting a head imprint, getting that imprint over to the manufacturer, then the processing and tooling required JUST to mould the liner to your noggin, somehow shoving THAT bespoke liner into the shell, getting it to you - we're talking about manpower and resources. Just think on average how much extra we're all going to pay - we pay about 40% more for custom, made-to-fit leathers, tailored suits and trousers etc. Now, does the consumer REALLY want to fork out almost a grand or more for an arai/shoei, or would people justify paying arai prices for a HJC?! I think not.

It's not necessary safer to implement your concept since it's unique to you and there's no other imperical testing for your situation. You can get lids to "custom fit" per se. I had my corsair "custom fitted" - or had the fit refined to fit me better - the shop fiddled about with the liner - put different thicknesses on the skull cap and put thicker cheek pads - That in a sense is more achievable than a custom mould and yes, many manufacturers if not all adopt this principle. But the first solution to the problem is don't get a lid which shell's not compatible with your head.

I believe some company did offer alternative padding in smaller and larger sizes so you could 'tune' the helmet to your head size.
Not sure who it was or if they still do, presume it wasn't that popular

What I'd do is go to a bike show where there's loads of stands with helmets and try on pretty much every single brand - you should find a few that offer you a decent fit.

Remember Rossi also has a 'made to measure' million-pound bike.
Yet the vast majority of bikes don't offer any easy adjustability in the riding position as stock and that's a much bigger purchase.

But that means Rossi's helmets may well be designed differently - for instance if he actually wore them for some time, they may get too loose, because the initial fit is correct rather than a little too tight.

Larger AGV outlets can pad a helmet to suit you, with a fair range of customisation options. Would agree with g, the fit varies from brand to brand, suomi cripple me, shoei fit like a glove. Just a case of finding what suits.

I think if it was made affordable by the maufacturers people would go for it. The inner shell absorbs the impact in an accident, any gap between this shell and the head is not any protection.

The foam inside a lid is only there for comfort, not protection.

Two reasons this will not happen;

Helmets deform with wear, which is a side effect of what they are designed to do in a crash - even Rossi's. It's just because he dosn't spend the same time in a single lid as the rest of us then he can affford to have one that fits off of the bat rather than having one to bed in as by the time the inner of Rossis lid is having wear issues he is wearing another one.

Liability - it is safety equipment, staff would need to be specially trained and it would open the staffs employers up to liability.

When you buy a new helmet it is always a nice firm snug fit, after a couple of years use they do go slack, therefore they won't be as safe. A made to measure inner shell would be an improvement even if it did cost a bit more.
The major helmet manufacturers should provide this service to the general public, not just famous superstars.
