Nice story mate. At least you stuck to your guns and you put enough doubt in the copper's minds to let you off.
You going to be keeping it on the right way round like a good boy now? ____________________ Bike - '98 Yamaha YZF600 Thundercat Pics

It would probably come under the rule of the numberplate has to be clearly displayed and readable at a distance of whatever it is
Not illegal to have a dirty bike, but have an obscured numberplate and it is
What would be good would be to get a private reg that reads the same upside down and the right way round, and put that on upside down, with some smart comment on the bit where the dealers name normally goes. ____________________ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I dont see why it has to state it explicitely in the law, the number your meant to display on the back of your bike is meant to be ABC 123 or whatever,
https://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d170/tristanthe/upsidedownplate.jpg
is different to that because it doesnt feature any numbers or letters, just random squiggles, it doesn't need to say it in the law, because it's already covered in the law of the english language.
Also whats the point? It wont get you out of gatsos, it wont stop police footage of you reading your plate when replayed, only thing it would do is stop the ANPR from picking you up and make it much harder for your plate to be written down, and why do you sound surprised that the copper got power trippy, if your not the kind of person that wants to deal with that dont do pointless things like this. |

I'm struggling to see the point in doing it too.
You are not evading detection and are just 100% guaranteed to get pulled by any lurking trafpol.
If you think you'd get away with it in a court of law, then horse on brother..... ____________________ 18:54:48 Rob Fzs: jews don't give away stuff for free

The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001
Have a look at that, they have sample diagrams at the bottom which show the permitted layouts.
And it also says:
Further requirements for registration plates
11
(1) No reflex-reflecting material may be applied to any part of a registration plate and the plate must not be treated in such a way that the characters of the registration mark become, or are caused to act as, retroreflective characters.
(2) A registration plate must not be treated in any other way which renders the characters of the registration mark less easily distinguishable to the eye or which would prevent or impair the making of a true photographic image of the plate through the medium of camera and film or any other device.
(3) A registration plate must not be fixed to a vehicle -
(a) by means of a screw, bolt or other fixing device of any type or colour,
(b) by the placing of a screw, bolt or other fixing device in any position, or
(c) in any other manner,
which has the effect of changing the appearance or legibility of any of the characters of the registration mark, which renders the characters of the registration mark less easily distinguishable to the eye or which prevents or impairs the making of a true photographic image of the plate through the medium of camera and film or any other device.
(4) Section 59(2)(a) of the Act (regulations the contravention of which attracts a level 3 fine) applies to paragraphs (1), (2) and (3) of this regulation.

You wouldn't be unable to read it no, it'd be slightly harder though, name me one situation where you have to read the number plate of a bike on it's side in as much of a hurry as a speed gun copper has to read the plate of a bike going past. Which renders your example both moot and stupid.
| Quote: | That is not the point of doing this. If I wanted to evade detection from cameras, I would removed the number plate and ride without a number plate. End of. The purpose of having an upside number is not evasion. |
Ok, work with me here, what exactly was the point of doing this, I could understand it if you had some clever quip redied to deal with said coppers, but your original post just sounds like you shat a brick when they got pissy then came home and bitched about them being unfair on the internet.
Actually that's exactly what I'm saying, because I assumed you had at least a primary school level education, tell you what, next time your near a school go see if there's a teacher not doing anything, ask him or her if this is a C
https://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d170/tristanthe/u.jpg
turns out it isn't, because there are rules stating that a c looks like this:
C

Well posts above have shown it to be illegal, but I can see why you did it; because you could. I do things like that too Lucky to get off the hook though ____________________ Full licence from 16/4/08

I have a wierd type of dyslexia (can't remember the name of it) that means I can read just as well upside down as the right way up, I also do upside down mirror with no problem and right way up mirror is a piece of cake.
On top of this I use the Cyrillic alphabet as well as I am a Russian speaker.
I am shyt at writing though as letters come out all ways at times ____________________ Bikers make great organ donors, get 115 on your licence today. |

Actually, an upside down plate would confuse the hell out of ANPR and, if you did it on the front of a car, would render the SPECS cameras unable to read your plate for average speed checks.
If you were going to bother, I would get a plate made up with two of the letters transposed, then you might get away with it and say that you hadn't noticed and the plate had been on the bike since you bought it.
Not that I'd advocate doing this as it is illegal.
Cheers

Interestingly. None of that would appear to make flooding your plate with high intensity infra red light to flare out video cameras illegal. It pointedly says "Impairs the making of a TRUE photographic image.".
Well, IR illumination wouldn't affect a true photographic image in the slightest, IR is outside the visible spectrum and would therefore only effect an artificially enhanced photographic image. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Well I thought it was hillarious. Gave me a right chuckle.
We need more humour in this grey world and he didn't hurt anyone. Gave the police something to tell their mates I should think. |
