Did they actually manage to find any rules/ regs to "do" you for, or were they just being arsey 'cos they had the power to? I mean if they had fined you or whatever they'd have had to have claimed that you'd broken the law... just wondering if they actually said "that's illegal due to XYZ", or just "That's illegal 'cos I said so".

What would be good would be to get a private reg that reads the same upside down and the right way round, and put that on upside down, with some smart comment on the bit where the dealers name normally goes.

I dont see why it has to state it explicitely in the law, the number your meant to display on the back of your bike is meant to be ABC 123 or whatever,

is different to that because it doesnt feature any numbers or letters, just random squiggles, it doesn't need to say it in the law, because it's already covered in the law of the english language.

Also whats the point? It wont get you out of gatsos, it wont stop police footage of you reading your plate when replayed, only thing it would do is stop the ANPR from picking you up and make it much harder for your plate to be written down, and why do you sound surprised that the copper got power trippy, if your not the kind of person that wants to deal with that dont do pointless things like this.

I think it does perhaps show that it's a rather foolish idea because you're just 'asking' to be pulled.

On the DVLA site, one of the things in it's 'in brief' summary of 'plates says "Number Plates must be easy to read..." suspect that covers being the right way up.

The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001

Have a look at that, they have sample diagrams at the bottom which show the permitted layouts.

And it also says:

Further requirements for registration plates

(1) No reflex-reflecting material may be applied to any part of a registration plate and the plate must not be treated in such a way that the characters of the registration mark become, or are caused to act as, retroreflective characters.
(2) A registration plate must not be treated in any other way which renders the characters of the registration mark less easily distinguishable to the eye or which would prevent or impair the making of a true photographic image of the plate through the medium of camera and film or any other device.
(3) A registration plate must not be fixed to a vehicle -
(a) by means of a screw, bolt or other fixing device of any type or colour,
(b) by the placing of a screw, bolt or other fixing device in any position, or
(c) in any other manner,
which has the effect of changing the appearance or legibility of any of the characters of the registration mark, which renders the characters of the registration mark less easily distinguishable to the eye or which prevents or impairs the making of a true photographic image of the plate through the medium of camera and film or any other device.

I have a wierd type of dyslexia (can't remember the name of it) that means I can read just as well upside down as the right way up, I also do upside down mirror with no problem and right way up mirror is a piece of cake.
On top of this I use the Cyrillic alphabet as well as I am a Russian speaker.
I am shyt at writing though as letters come out all ways at times

Actually, an upside down plate would confuse the hell out of ANPR and, if you did it on the front of a car, would render the SPECS cameras unable to read your plate for average speed checks.

If you were going to bother, I would get a plate made up with two of the letters transposed, then you might get away with it and say that you hadn't noticed and the plate had been on the bike since you bought it.

Not that I'd advocate doing this as it is illegal.
