As an offshoot from the new licence/training 'debate' going on in that thread over there...

I want to know how many people did DAS, and out of those people, how many crashed within the first 6 months. Feel free to point out that you've gone longer without crashing Smile

Please don't vote if you didn't do DAS. Thumbs Up

Hi

Trouble is that even if a DASer is twice as likely to crash in style then that is probably 20% crashing rather than 10% crashing.

Suspect a far larger sample size is required.

All the best

I just clicked on "no I didn't", but I did my CBT, then rode for a year on the Planet, then did my DAS in a few days to get my license. Do I count or were you just looking for people who went from nowt to big bike license?

Oh yeah, it clearly would be for any meaningful research. I'm just being pedantic - I don't know anyone on here who's done DAS and then stacked it. That has to make a certain point towards the almighty licensing debate.

Hi

But how many people on here have passed their tests and stacked a 33hp+ bike within a couple of years?

Hint, clicking the "Users" link will supply the names Wink .

All the best

So, in summary, it's all bollocks.

Some people will crash. Others won't. Sometimes it'll be their fault, sometimes it won't be.

Hi

Pretty much, yes. Some people will crash, most will not. But some may crash avoidably and would be very well advised to gain more experience on a more user friendly bike (the way you did with the CB500).

Even forgetting the engine power, a large sports bike has a fair amount of weight, sharp brakes and quick steering which will all catch out the inexperienced.

Personally I would think that the experience is the most important thing. I would be far more likely to give someone a go on one of my bikes who had just got a the restricted licence after 3 years on a 125 than virtually any person who had just done DAS and bought an R6.

All the best

Keith

Likewise.

But I believe that there are far too many laws restricting what we do already. Have people do a decent CBT and sit a good bike test, and then let them get what they like. If someone's stupid enough to buy a Gixer Thou after 3 days on a bike, it's their funeral.

Everyone progresses at a different speed, let them.

Fair enough for them, but I'd be more concerned with the resultant rising insurance premiums and power-restricting legislation the government are said to be considering.

Finally some sense. Bollocks to the nanny state, if I want to go out and buy a 200mph bike and ride it into the nearest tree then that should be up to me.

Hi

Pretty much agree 100%. Any training and test needs to be relevant to actual road situations, and needs to be both simple enough and cheap enough to encourage people to do it. There are people passing tests now who should not, and people failing who should pass.

Legislation is a sledge hammer to crack a nut, and does not take into account individuals. EG Col who has just done DAS and who I would happily let ride my bikes, compared to 30 year old people I know who have just done their DAS but who I would still regard as a learner.

All we can really do is try and convince those just starting out that although there bike licence might be the right colour, a ZX10R is not really a suitable bike to continue their learning experience on.

I am very dubious of legislation. I pretty much think that if every law passed in the last 20 years was repealed tomorrow it would be no great loss, and with numerous advantages.

All the best

Keith

Is DAS a different test to the 33bhp one? or purely done on a bigger bike?
After passing my test i rode for another 2 months on my NSR before buying my CBR and haven't yet crashed but i think thats more to do with luck!

And i agree with the fact that there should be more training too because even a 33bhp bike is fast enough to kill you, but at the same time when i first got my NSR the only reason i had enough road sense was from my driving (IMO) because the cbt wasn't much use to asses how "safe" i was!

Same test, bigger bike. They do expect you to use the acceleration tho, and not dawdle about on it.

I agree 100% but the current government does not believe in personal responsibility. They believe in statistics. If there are headlines saying "Bikers kill themselves on the roads" then they need to pass some legislation to sort it.

In the US the culture is very much more that of personal responsibility where what Bendy says is true. Anyone with a bike license can get any bike, and they do because the insurance is part of a government scheme and so is often cheaper.

This country is governed too much by headlines and not enough by common sense. There is no way they are going to stand for the political baclkash they would get if they don't meet their road "safety" targets. They just won't stand for it until we are all riding C90's with stabilisers.

(Saying that the US feel the same about handguns, but I suppose you are more likely to kill yourself with a bike, whereas with a gun you could potentially kill other people so I suppose there is a big difference.)

We need to vote personal responsibility in and nanny state out really.

(I dunno if the other lot would be hugely better - but they *might* be an improvement...)

Sorta off topic Question

If you pass your test (Not DAS) and are restricted for two years to a 33bhp bike, can you still use the 125cc for two years anyway and then move up after too bigger bikes +33bhp (Ie Use a 125cc instead of say 250/400cc ) ?
Thumbs Up Thanks Thumbs Up
