previously had an xr250 before it was stolen. I've got a bandit 600 at the moment but I'm contemplating buying an xr 400 (as well as keeping the bandit). I'd like to spend less than £1k on one. Is this reasonable? I dont mind the age as long as its in good working order but preferably 1990 onwards.

also, how does the drz compare?in terms of price, performance etc

many thanks Thumbs Up

Erm, not sure you'll get an XR400 for that really.

Think the current model started in maybe the mid ninties?

They've got a niche market but are sought after in that for their basic engine and reasonable all-round ability.

The DRZ weighs a bit more and makes a bit more power; you get water cooling and an electric start. Probably similar sorts of prices, despite being newer.

I thought my budget might be a bit on the small side.I'll keep saving then and wait a bit longer. I'm in no hurry.

Yeah, my xr was a 1986 model and it was still solid as a brick wall.

thanks for the advice on the differences.Electric start doesnt bother me either way. On the subject of power, the power difference between the two doesnt make a huge difference to me but I wanted an xr 400 over a 250 because the 250 struggled at speed on the roads and I may contemplate supermoto wheels for it at some point.

I'll keep shopping around and see what crops up. I made end up going for something like a dr350 which is cheaper.

How about something like a DR600 or KLR600 (not 600cc not 650cc versions).

I've had two DR600s, both cost around £600. Weight is acceptable off road, though definitely heavier than an XR250.

Power isn't amazing, but is a decent compromise considering the weight - probably not much faster than the 250, but gets there a lot more easily.

yeah, they are 2 more options although I dont fancy anything too weighty.it will probably be a case of whatever turns up at the time

I might settle for another (newer) xr 250 or ttr 250 or similar.

ive had a few xr400's for under a grand and been pretty clean jst gota look around, had a ttr250 too pink one went really well, revvy though. old dr600's are shocking compared to newer stuff. for a grand id get a crm250, kdx220 or the likes, loads more quicker, cheaper to look after and 2 strokes rock Cool if not klx 300's are ok just watch the top ends as they can be made of fudge if you get a bad one. xr600s can be had for under a grand, awesume bits of kit. go really well Very Happy

meaty 4 stroke lol behave, my 380 would do most 4 bangers dude. if you feel the need to go 4 stroke an xr400 or 600 is a good bet, reliable and been around for yonks and you can get a fairly un battered one for under a grand, dr350's are cheap too but all the ones i know of are shite and turnt to dust well fast Laughing

haha.

yeah i definitely want a 4 stroke.especially because my xr250 was so reliable and so basic.i abused it and all I ever did was top up the oil. the last thing i wanna do is rebuild the top end every five minutes lol

shame you dont sell any supermotos or enduro bikes for poor people like me =(. im starting my full time job soon though so roll on the money

thanks again for the advice Thumbs Up

Worth considering a KLR250.

A good XR250 alternative. As was proved this weekend it can handle fairly serious off roading.

You'd struggle to pay more than a grand for one.
Will cruise at 75mph no probs. Top speed of nearly 90. Sounds good, nice meaty (ish) 4 stroke.

Personally I'm a fan of this one, but it might just be the CR250 front end being shiny.
