I'm trying to strip the engine out so I can get to the gear box to try to work out why it won't select 2nd gear or lower.

I've got this far with the gear box but there's a nut in the middle that I don't have a tool for, what tool do I need or is there a clever way to get it off?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If it's a castellated nut then the easiest method is to get a socket of the same size and cut notches into with with a dremel or something similar.

The same thing goes for engine mount bolts.

Thumbs Up

Cool cheers I'll give cutting up an old socket a go. Why do they use such an odd nut to hold it in?

They have a greater surface area and therefore higher tensile strength, I think.

I'm sure someone will come up with a 'good' reason such as it being to allow the nut to sit down into a recess only slightly wider than itself. If it was a standard hex, you wouldn't be able to fit a socket round the outside of it.

I suspect the real (and more cynical) reason is that it makes you either take the bike to a dealer for servicing or buy a special tool off Honda.

£14

Yeh I suppose that makes sense, I'll give the socket thing a shot and if it doesn't work I'll try to get hold of an official tool.

Hey! I know it's quite an old post, but I'll give it a try... Have you figured what caused the problem? I've just encountered the same thing on my NSR-125 (and yet at the stage of getting the nut off the clutch Very Happy).

Thanks!
