33bhp restriction. A story for all.

After reading numerous encounters on here where police do not care about restriction, I forwent the whole paying £200 for some washers.

However my friend who had a zxr400, DID get his put in, and had a smash on sunday night. He somehow ended up on the wrong side of the road after another bike did a dodgy overtake, and had a head on collision with a car. After being rushed to hospital, the police informed him that his bike would be being taken to a recovery centre, and it will remain there until such time as a bike inspector has assessed it.

He got a phone call this morning, from a policewoman, Telling him that the assessor had assessed the bike and that it was good to see that it was restricted. Apparently they do check.

Just thought I'd let everyone know, seeing as it always is portrayed on here and other forums that the police are stupid and don't check.

Making me think about getting some little washers.

Hope he's okay but from the way you describe it it sounds as though he was at fault for the accident and riding dangerously, if he's caused an accident which has injured someone else the police are likely to take it an awful lot more seriously. At the end of the day it boils down to if you ride sensibly, don't act like an idiot and don't crash stupidly then you'll be okay.
In my position if I had an accident I've given instructions to my next of kin that my bike and possessions are all to be recovered home immediately and whatever precautions needed taken, restrictor washers fitted/road legal can for example.

I just took my GSXR 400 to a dyno place, asked the guy to mark where it made 33bhp and then bodged a throttle stop myself. Very easy, took all of 10 minutes and works no problems. None of this £200 malarky.

Plus I've had a few ideas for how to make it stop anyone else from getting full throttle, but with the right technique, I can still get full throttle out of it. Hehe.

I got away with having no restriction for 2 years, it was after my restriction that I got pulled over for going well over 100mph.

Yes, they do check now and again.

It's up to each individual as to whether it's worth playing the numbers game.

I've aways been restricted, but I did make my restrictor washers my self. For an hour or two in the garage and 40 quid for a dyno run it makes no sense to put yourself at risk.

Out of interest how quick can 33bhp get you assuming normal commuter bike eg Divvy 600??

There is always a risk, ive never heard of anyone checking, that doesnt mean they wont, risk is very very low though.

im probobly gonna be keeping them in my rvf until restriction is up, im only at half power and it still feels pretty quick, i can still do stupid speeds and corner well on it so not that huge a loss, granted i cant get up to 140 but i can get to 100 fairly quickly (indicates higher but 100 is more likely).

also im only 20 so if i get caught without restricters in its gonna mess up insurance in the future.

while on the topic of restriction, would you have to restrict your bike if you were abroad?

Think your missin the point, they checked his bike cos it was a bad crash, or the police who attended the scene wanted answers so had the bike checked for defects and legalitys.
You dont get pulled up for speeding and they then tell you its gettin checked cos they want to do you for speeding.

If you have no restrictors, and you crash your bike, crash it badly enough so they can't dyno it....problem solved.

Stamp on the downpipes until they are snapped, then throw some large washers down there.

Stamp on throttle till its damaged in some way, then throw some plastic bits at it, and say it had a throttle stop on it
