So which is the best for cornering?

Keeping the bike as vertical as possible while moving and leaning the body over in a knee-down styleee.

Or

Keeping body and bike at a constant similar angle with head leaning straight and the odd knee movement to give a bit of control.

My limited reasonably slow speed trails would indicate the former feels "faster" and the later feels "smoother."

Any help or guidance please.

smooth all the way as a point worth noting.

I prefer to hang off because:

1) the bike isnt leaning as far thus having more grip
2) feels easier and more natural to carry more speed through the corner
3) by hanging off, shoulders included using the correct body position your dragging the bike through the corner via your body weight, a much more natural way of cornering fast and thus the reason it feels 'smoother'

Hang off, its a lot safer and allows you to carry more speed.

i`ve never mastered leaning off, i know its probably the best way around a corner, but i rarely corner fast enough to warrant it.

Lean in for me.

Providing you're comfortable doing it, hanging off should offer a few advantages to safety and smoothness:

Bikes with wide tyres will have the CoG acting through the contact point of the tyre.

Suspension is more in line with the likely need (ie bumps in the road go up and down, not side to side).

Your body gives a little bit more 'suppleness' to the ride.

You're less likely to 'run out of room' at decent corner speeds.

Even race riders didn't start hanging off until late 60s or something - on the road it may look like you're trying hard but won't make much difference, you'd be better concentrating on keeping smooth lines and avoiding the usual manholes, grates and ripply tarmac.

Once i've assessed the corner entry, i get my body in position and hang off. Other road users may think that i'm being desperate, but i'm much more comfortable with my arse cheeck on the inside of a bend and my chin above that respective shoulder/arm looking at the exit. I tend to focus more at the corner that way rather than just sitting upright and countersteering... don't have to lean as much too (and appease the chicken strip chasers)

In line lean for me, as my bike is well slow and if I hug off on any corner it would turn sharply into the verge lol.

It's only a small difference in most cases I'm sure, but if you can do it without diverting a lot of attention towards it, I'd say you might as well.

In a similar way to it may not actually be safest for everyone to avoid those manhole covers if thinking about it distracts them from other things, but if you can get used to doing it as second-nature, it's worth it.

suspension works much better if the bike is more upright, and you are less likely to catch a peg on the road.

A friend of mine died, and I believe what happened was the back stepped out as he went over a catseye at near max lean, as it slipped, it leant over further, and the peg caught the road (leaving a mark on the road)

he then stood the bike up which meant he went wide and hit a tree

I cant be sure thats what happened, but I believe if he had gone in at the same speed while hanging off, he would still be alive today.

I also think that crouch standing on the pegs reduces the work for the suspension, as you legs do a bit of suspension work, so things are smoother on a bumpy road. So your bum is just above the saddle.

I find it almost scary not to lean off now. I get to corners and **** myself as if I can't make it round if I don't lean off because it just doesn't feel natural. It does have the side effect of making me ride more smoothly with a pillion on the back though as I couldn't lean even if I wanted to (similar in the rain).

It's what you feel comfortable with, and what you do round corners.

I mean, would you hang off a Goldwing, how uncouth Cool

With that little ground clearance, definitely Razz. (Though even my not-too-slight figure is going to make less of a difference on something that big than most other bikes, I admit.)

What you also have to conside is that hanging off puts you nearer that oncomming traffic.
So if hanging if off, that last palce you want to be in near the white line or cats eyes.

Just do what feels right for you. If you are having to think about how you are going to hang off round that corner, then you are more likely to make a mistake and end up on the deck. Just go with the flow. The less you have to think about the better. Thumbs Up

Thanks to all. I went for a run out last night and my findings are; As I ride at moderate pace mostly I lean in, it seems (for me) to be natural, smooth and more enjoyable. However ther are a couple of twisties on one of my runs that to maintian progress through I must hang off. It gets a little easier and more natural each time.

Again, thank you all the gist of it seems to be that hanging off is (at speed) safer and faster but doing what feels right for me and is smooth makes for better riding. That makes sense to me.

Is "hanging off" something that you learn with experience?

I have been riding 2-3 weeks and i know i'm probably no where near ready, just curious as some day i would like to be able to "hang off" Cool

I don't think it's as simple as either hanging off or not.

To corner effectively and safely you must shift your weight and position on the bike, even if it's too subtle for an observer to notice. Dropping the inside shoulder and just shifting one ass cheek a little is enough for almost any bend on the road unless you're really hooning it.

After this there is a scale of hanging off that goes from what I describe to this :

Shocked

I tend to shift my weight more in the rain and if the road is damp.

ive now taken to the leg out supermoto style again now that im on the klr, although i have found that im scraping the pegs Shocked
depending on my mood and the road conditions ill vary between hanging off, leg out and normal lean,
it all depends on the corner and how fast im trying to get around it and wether i want the back to slide or not,
fun times Very Happy

iooi: of course it'll put you further away from on-coming traffic if you're on the centre line in a left hander - and you should probaby be the other side of the road in a right hander Razz.

leatherpatches: but he's actually not hanging much you'll notice - what with there being very little space between him and the bike.

Somewhere I've got a picture of me elbow-down on a (road) RS250, as it had dodgyish tyres I had to hang off a hell of a lot to do it and keep the bike in traction.

Clone: It's something you have to make a conscious choice to do - don't worry about it for the moment, I'd say, unless you're intending to become a track-riding god some time soon, anyway Smile.
