Well I just got 150 miles out of my ER5 tank and I usually get 120. It has just come back from the garage and it had:

1 / New back wheel bearings.

2/ Valve clearance check and the exhaust valve timing was found to be a little off. It was corrected.

Was it one of these that caused the extra 30 miles or both and is it me or does that seem to be a hell of a jump?

Nah, you must have initiated ghey mode at some point.

Symptoms include bike not revving over 3k and the rider emitting a tutting noise every time a quick bike goes past.

Possibly both of them - if your old back wheel bearing was causing drag then that'd make the bike consume more fuel, plus if the valve gaps were off then that'd mean the engine wasn't running at full efficiency.

More likely to be the valve gaps having the most effect though in my estimation.

I disagree. A worn wheel bearing can risk vibrating in place, which if you've ever played with cheap gyroscopes before you know will immediately dissipate all stored rotational energy. The valve gaps would make a big deal, but I think the bigger problem was a worn rear wheel bearing.
